If you haven't watched the 100 years of Olympic films on the Criterion Channel, it is so so so worth it. The changes in the sports, clothing, and coverage over the years is incredibly fascinating (I never would have guessed when ice hockey and speed skating finally made it to indoor venues)

They're so bad!!

Every segment focuses on the least interesting competitor - like, "this guy is absolutely expected to lose," let's have an extremely stilted interview with his spouse (always in an outdoor location), then "oh, he lost," end of segment; repeat.

Does your interest in Olympic hosts extend to the official Olympic documentaries? I.e., how Bud Greenspan has somehow created some of the least interesting coverage of what should be triumphant human stories ever??

How about an enormous animatronic hummingbird that was part of a pollinators exhibit at my local zoo!

I got shingles at 25 and it SUCKED. Just random stabbing pains for weeks after I had "recovered" from the initial fever/horrible illness. I will get the vaccine the second I am able (assuming it is still available in 6 years...)

I'm not sure this internet was "better", but it definitely felt less endlessly horrifying. I think our millennial complaints about tech reflect this shift in the function of the Internet from useful tool to find things/people to endless ads and possibly fake info in service of billionaires

I remember the days before Napster was shut down, when the Internet was fast and you just never knew what you would actually get when you tried to download that live Radiohead track, but it only took 30 seconds, so who cared?

I love a graph! Why was the winter humidity so much higher in 2021 than in the other years?
January 16, 2025 at 10:10 AM
YES! The graphs you could make!! Correlations with environmental parameters, maybe correlating with climate change! Spatial variations in monitoring locations! In all seriousness, meta-analyses of environmental data were part of my PhD and this sort of data is so valuable on so many dimensions!

Today I was forced to scan a QR code with my phone to operate the soda machine at Wendy's, and it made me nearly lose my mind. Just, WHY????

Mine is a terror to random pieces of paper, which she likes to turn into confetti... They are weird little monsters
