I’m *seriously* fed up with AI chat bots messing up all my web tools - offering to blocking half the workable UX space and offering to “help me” 🤦🏻‍♀️

When explaining AI to non tech friends I have realized that:

ChatGPT has become a generic

Nostalgia overload watching #breakingthebird.

Often omitted from early social web stories is how folks were driven by content/art/society etc. Hlad it’s included in arc of this story.

Great times. Great peeps. With one bittersweet RIP.

I know ya feel me - I am extremely frustrated by our diffuse online channels these days - cognitive overload has reached max on who to reach where.

You should know that a big part of 18F's work was to make sure multi-million to multi-*hundreds*-of-millions dollar contracts at fed *and* state level didn't go to shitty enterprise IT consultancies that *repeatedly* delivered tech that didn't work, was late, or didn't even do what it needed to

I’m revisiting and ruminating on Granovetter’s “strength of weak ties” in 2025 — how is it holding up? A few questions to start:

-Do we naturally crave stronger ties as we age, or has tech/social media changed driven change?

-Are weak ties holding up in our current zeitgeist?

Observation: I’ve gotten SO out of the habit of “tweeting” over the past few years that it’s like working a new muscle to remind myself how delightful it can be to reconnect online.

The legacy of crypto isn’t a technology revolution but instead that it created a culture where get rich quick mentality, grifting and Ponzi schemes were a virtue. Then made these people rich enough that they could influence elections.

That and being the financial instrument for ransomware payments

With every launch of a new social media app, I am reminded of High School.

Really, I’m fine hanging out far away from *that* clique.

Aside - anyone have that old Breakfast Club movie as social media app meme to pull up?!

there’s this sort of evangelicizing, patronizing tendency of using hateful content as evidence to get people to “wake up.” however, people don’t “wake up” by being immersed in horror. they gasp in constant shock and… that’s it. this is known as trauma porn.

you can find a billion instances of hate speech, hate crimes, etc. the difference between amplification and illumination is that illuminating something requires putting it into context, explaining what it means, what it’s a part of, and what can be done about it.
