After passing the CARES act in March 2020, less than a month later the government started sending out stimulus checks to 100Ms of Americans. How did that happen?

It's so easy to avoid Firefox's AI thing. It has prompted me once ever, I declined, and that's been that.

One and done. See ya tomorrow.

Work's been busy for a few weeks, what did I miss on here?

Most agencies have policies requiring chases to be discontinued if the chase becomes the greater risk to the public.

Some of the 18k law enforcement agencies in The US are backwards on chasing (cough Alabama), but most major agencies are getting this right.

Which of those countries have guns as irresponsibly available as they are here in the US?
September 28, 2025 at 6:53 PM
How many police deaths would there be without the training? The ~10/yr number of non-vehicular traffic stop police deaths is the number with all of this training. You need an estimate of the number without the training to gauge the effect of the training.

They also don't have any school shootings in the UK. It seems things are much safer when guns are controlled.

The important ratio is the unjustifiable killings of civilians by police to the police killed. We know names like Philando Castile from the unjustifiable cases.
September 28, 2025 at 4:51 AM
There are about 20 million traffic stops in the US per year and about 100 lead to the killing of a civilian each year (and around 10 lead to the killing of an officer). I would expect a far larger proportion to end in civilian deaths if cops were overly paranoid.

2% of all Americans died in the civil war, so things have to get way worse before Trump catches up with James Buchanan.

And, I mean, all presidents up through Buchanan at least tolerated slavery, with many being personally financially dependent on it. We've had some bad folks behind the wheel.

I would assume you have to be #1 (or #2 if #1 is the opposite gender) on the call sheet to be eligible for the "lead actor" category, and the others are eligible for "supporting actor".

Was Matthew Whitaker the "masculine toilet" guy from Trump's first term?
September 12, 2025 at 4:33 AM
So, in this hypo, Trump would open himself up to being hounded by House investigations if I compliment Trump?

Why would he do that?
August 26, 2025 at 1:58 AM
Perhaps, but I wouldn't advise waiting. The Holocaust made millions of people with nothing to lose, but no power to meaningfully fight back.

Eventually reality will catch up with us. Cutting vaccine research and contagion monitoring is harmless, until it isn't. Eliminating a lot of the lower wage work force is invisible, until it isn't. Using the global currency as a weapon is safe, until the world pivots off SWIFT.
August 23, 2025 at 7:22 PM
Honestly, we need to reconsider sanctions. They just make Putin the guy who controls Russian civilians' access to resources. And it makes other nations want to stop using SWIFT (and thus the dollar) as the global currency, and that would be a nightmare for us.

How bad is it going to have to get for this to become politically popular enough to win the power to do it? It's going to have to get bad enough that millions of offline swing/non voters feel it and recognize the cause. Or we'll get more Trump.

This really sucks.

I've never worked with a PM that has shipped anything close to a Rick Rubin level product.

Welcome to Chicago!
August 11, 2025 at 4:10 AM
It would be a dream for them to come at Chicago. JB Pritzker has the competence, the resources, and the citizenry to shut them down and continue building his national profile.

It's her obviously optimal choice.

She has one way to play the hand she's got (Trump being guilty and unable to escape the story, her being able to redirect attention to Dem targets, Congress being weak AF).

The alternatives is to stay in prison till death (distant if silent, soon if honest).
July 30, 2025 at 8:53 AM
@grok is this true? (And, uh, how could one do this safely?)
July 30, 2025 at 8:37 AM
Their models for understanding reality are simple and largely invalid, and these bad mental models lead them to believe absurd things, like that beauty is a function of the ratio of two torso measurements.
