Benjamin Doyle's final speech really got under Casey Costello's skin. She's made a connection between Doyle's speech and the attack on Winston Peters' home. #nzpol

Oh absolutely. Shakespeare and New Zealand go way back. Like this quote from The Drunkard, one of his lesser known comedies.

Steven Wilson featured earlier with Porcupine Tree. But this is probably my favourite solo album of his (although that can be The Raven That Refused To Sing, depending on mood lol) #VinylWednesday

And because it's Steven, of course it's based around a dark theme.

Themes and concept

According to Wilson, the concept album is written from a female perspective, and the concept and story are inspired by the case of Joyce Carol Vincent, where a woman living in a large city dies in her apartment and no one misses her for over two years, despite her having family and friends. Wilson explained:

"The basic story, or concept of the record – it's about a woman growing up, who goes to live in the city, very isolated, and she disappears one day and no one notices. There's more to it than that. Now, what's really interesting about this story is that your initial reaction when you hear a story like that is, 'Ah, little old bag lady that no one notices, no one cares about.' [Vincent] wasn't [like that]. She was young, she was popular, she was attractive, she had many friends, she had family, but for whatever reason, nobody missed her for three years."

Vinyl lovers! This new podcast hosted by Charlotte Ryan & Duncan Greive is quite a fun look at the rise and fall and rise again of records in NZ:

This one's more keyboard/synth focused than most, something that metalhead me used to baulk at. But it's bloody awesome.

While it's still definitely prog, there's a lot of pop sensibilities and melodies on display here. Prog pop, if you like. #VinylWednesday

Onto one of my favourite bands, and one of the best albums in my collection.

Interestingly it didn't really grab me at first. But it's grown on me to become a firm favourite.

If there's one album from today you should check out, it's this one. #VinylWednesday

YES. Also rather rich of the RW to accuse anyone else of being precious language cops who can't handle robust political debate when the likes of Nicola Willis can most charitably described as being as tough as a haemophiliac bound in a corset lined with sandpaper. #nzpol

1. It's an idiom, not a metaphor
2. We know it's an idiom
3. The issue is that YOU, a RW govt minister, directly linked an act of individual vandalism to a LW political party without any direct evidence.
4. When have the Greens ever advocated political violence?

Also Nicola Willis MP I won’t forget how you sucked up to me at the library trying to say you weren’t right wing and you were a fan of my books. You wanted a selfie and I said no. You said you just wanted to make life better for children and now look at you? Calling anyone who tries to save the lives of kids a dog. I hope you’re ashamed of yourself. I knew then you were just another pick me power hungry social climber who would walk on the backs of innocent families to get what you want.

It’s almost as if modern conservatism is built on a bedrock of hypocrisy. #nzpol

Compare and contrast: A statement from an NZ First spokesman 6 months ago about the actions of a party member and supporter, and a statement today from that same party’s leader.

Greens polling higher than National, despite their ongoing coordinated attack campaign attempting to paint them as the "radical violent left" is sparking much joy.

I'm old enough to remember when Willis policed language rather than engage with the fact that she had cancelled pay equity for women in order to make up for budget shortfalls caused by tax breaks she couldn't afford to enact. #nzpol

Appearing on Morning Report's weekly political panel on Wednesday, Willis said, rather than policing language, people should take a sand on bad behaviour by protestors.

Pain of Salvation are up next. They are Cruise to the Edge regulars, so I was gutted when they weren't added to the 2024 lineup. It would've been great to catch them live. But alas...

It absolutely counts!

I have about three crates of CDs in iTunes (and on my phone). I like doing the same (1,113 albums, 23.8 days).

This is the 2nd band that rapidly escalated my prog tendencies, initially via the epic Arriving Somewhere But Not Here from their album Deadwing.

But on balance this is probably my favourite Porcupine Tree album. Mind the dark subject matter though #VinylWednesday

The next one may be a bit more conventional (well as conventional as prog can be, I guess).

It may be worth a spin... provided you don't mind songs themed around serial killers. 🤘😐🤘

Can you livestream when you get to Cockroach King?

I can sense the "WTF?!" expression from here. 🤘🤣🤘

I'm rapidly learning the problem with conservatives is their refusal to consider progressive ideas despite a mountain of evidence showing their effectiveness. Even at fulfilling conservative goals like generating a metric crap tonne of money!

It's real "cut off your nose to spite your face" stuff 🤷‍♂️
amyklassen.bsky.social
It's true! When I studied economics, I was stunned by the ROI of social programs. Every dollar spent on childcare returns about $2.80 to the economy, and healthcare delivers even greater returns with broader social impact.

A universal basic income is simply smart fiscal policy. Why the reluctance?
brenttoderian.bsky.social
For every €1 provided through a Basic Income For Artists pilot program in Ireland, the government got €1.46 back. So it’s being made permanent.

Over and over we see it. It saves public money to provide public housing. And it makes public money to provide basic income.

We can’t afford to NOT do it.

First up is one of the bands that signalled I'd transitioned from metaller to prog guy. I discovered them on Pandora (when it was still a thing here) and imported this album from overseas.

It was love at first listen 🤘😍🤘 #VinylWednesday
