It has got a five-star rating on Amazon. A local author has realised a life-long dream and has self-published his debut novel. Inspired by stories such as Lord of the Rings, The Lion, the Witch & the Wardrobe and even Harry Potter, John Bright has finally put pen to paper to write his fantasy novel, ‘The Riddle, The Stones and The Sorcerer’.

Opinion: Let’s not use AI to rewrite Austen

A opinion piece by me!
I'm not gonna lie if you use AI to rewrite or write any piece of literature i immediately distrust you.
Why are we letting our imagination be taken over by a cold heartless machine?
Opinion: Let’s not use AI to rewrite Austen
I sometimes get magazines, think cosmopolitan, vogue and the occasional Women’s Health etc. Mostly to make art collages but I sometimes take the time to read them first. They’re great samples to gain inspiration in my own article writing and how I might get into the business.  I was reading this one article in this month’s cosmo and there was a line that took me aback.

It's been a while since I've graduated from University and I'm worried my proofreading and editing skills are getting lazy. So, like a body builder I'm going to train these muscles of mine by doing a course in proofreading and editing.

So, like a body builder I'm going to train these muscles of mine by doing a course in proofreading and editing. I found the Publishing Training Centre through LinkedIn and while the course wasn't free, I knew it was important to keep my skills up to date.

Had this article from my work experience deep in my folders and I think it should see the light of day. It was about the increasing number of livestock and pony fatalities out on Dartmoor. I spoke to the charity behind the FB post and to someone from DLPS, urging motorists to mind their speed.
‘Be DartMOOR wise’
This article was originally for my work experience at PlymouthLive but unfortunately it never got published. However, I'm posting it here because I'm very proud with it and it's one of my best articles I've written.

I'm a creative, I like fantasy, I LOVE DnD!
I also want a career in the writing industry either through content writing or copywriting.
I had this idea in the back of my head for a while now: 'what if Faerûn had a magazine/newspaper version of Vogue or Cosmopolitan' and then 'what would it look?'
SCRY: a vogue like magazine in the world of Faerûn
Brief: Write a fashion/lifestyle article interviewing a famous celebrity in the Dungeons and Dragons world of Faerûn. Target Audience (in the world of Faerûn) : ● Primary: Fans of Rina, including Bards and those interested in her fashion. ● Secondary: Music, fashion and celebrity lovers looking for someone new to be fans of or at least interested in. ● Demographics: This is depends on races because some (like the elves) can be hundreds if not thousands of years old, but think roughly 17- 35 years old in our reality.

Look you caught me. I've been in a writing slump.
I'm stretching my writing muscles today with a one minute brief that was roughly... eight days ago. I swear I'm punctual in reality.

This brief is all to do with Sushi! Mhmmmmm my favourite.
One Minute Briefs: Sushi
The Brief: Create posters to advertise Sushi for International Sushi Day (which when this is published as already passed, oops.) Inspired by the creative community One Minute Briefs, I did some copy spec on one of their small challenges: Sushi. Their premise is simple and as I've been in a writing slump (happens to the best of us) I need to stretch my writing muscles in small ways before a injure myself.

I was given the opportunity to write for SomersetLive during my work placement because I'm ordinarily from that county. Due to the nice weather we were having, I had the idea to write a list of the top pubs and bars in Somerset with a beer garden so that people could enjoy the sun with their drink
Somerset’s best pubs and bars with beer gardens to soak up the sun
Here are the top Tripadvisor rated pubs with outdoor seating so you can take in the rays with a nice pint in hand. This list has been reviewed so pubs with a very small outdoor space were cut. Attention all Britons! The sun is out and well you know what our weather is like, so let’s enjoy it while it lasts, especially here in Somerset.

Found poetry. It's quite an interesting insight into the human mind. I believe lists and notes are what make us human. I always feel privileged when I find things like this. It's like finding gold.
Found Poetry
'Found Poetry' is a type of poetry created by taking words, phrases, and sometimes whole passages from other sources and reframing them by making changes in spacing and lines, or by adding or deleting text, thus imparting new meaning. Blackout Poetry is an example of found poetry that I've spoken about before. I believe anything can be art, and over the years I've started picking up scraps of scribbles that people leave behind.

Have you ever tried blackout poetry? Well, get a book your not emotional attached to (and i mean 0! don't ruin your favourite book!) get a marker pen and mark out fun or cool words you like. And there you go, you're a poet!
Blackout Poetry
I had never heard of blackout poetry before, until I went to a workshop my Uni society was hosting. The Creative Chairman got a load of books from the charity shop, black markers and spread them out onto tables. She then said, "Pick up a book and ruin it!" Ruin... a book. The scandal! But we did a few and it was super fun.

A spec billboard copy (I pitched from a Word Tonic brief) for Chappell Roan's upcoming release of her single 'The Giver'. I collaborated with a friend who is a massive Chappell fan. We had fun coming up with each headline, and laughed so hard we were afraid of getting kicked out of the cafe.
Chappell Roan
Project: Billboard Announcement for the Release date of "The Giver" Create an impactful, eye-catching billboard to announce the release date of Chappell Roan’s upcoming single, "The Giver." The billboard should generate excitement, intrigue, and anticipation for the release, encouraging fans to mark their calendars and listen to the song on its release date. Target Audience: ● Primary: Fans of Chappell Roan, including pop and alternative music listeners.

Inspired by my blog post on a similar topic, I wrote a library copy campaign inspiring more people to join their local library. I've created an looping Ad banner that might appear on websites. Instagram posts using meme structure to appeal to gen z. I also created a newsletter on upcoming events.
Join the Library
Spec work idea: Library Card Client: Plymouth Central Library Brief: The Local Library wants to promote their services and offerings to attract more people to get a library card and use their services. The Challenge: The number of users for the library services is at an all time low. With the rise in low literacy rates amongst young adults and children, it’s important to spread awareness of the library’s valuable resources that could encourage new members to read and use other digital resources.

So I recently entered this short story into a competition…. Long story short (hehe) it didn’t win or get shortlisted, but I still think it’s one of the best short stories I’ve done in a while. I’m very proud of this piece so I’m re-publishing it on my website for you all to read and enjoy.
The Barista Hag
In a Coffee One, along a very mundane high street there worked a hag. She wasn’t like your typical hag or wise woman (for one thing she was working in a café). Quick imagine a hag for a second. What do you see? Well, this hag looked like any other old lady: wrinkled skin, a slight hobbled walk, had the affinity of grabbing youngsters' cheeks, and give them a hard boiled sweet.

A short but sweet post.
I've recently been having a go at writing Haiku poetry. While you don't have to fit around the 5-7-5 structure it's still interesting trying to create words that fit within the structure and also make sense to the overall theme of the poem. Here's my attempt after many edits.

Everyone listens to music right? It’s in the background while I write.

Heres a little peak at my music taste.

Hint its mostly ✨women✨ 😎
A little peruse into my Spotify playlists – from heavy metal to bedroom pop.
Do you like music? Well I do, so here's my three top picks from my playlist. Hint they're all women.

No writer is a failure until they are dead. Full stop. A career in writing is built over decades. It's built like a house, brick by brick, book by book. Not published yet? Emphasis on YET. Book not selling? It's not selling YET. You're only done when you quit.

And I don't think you're ready to quit

Hey, check out this copy spec I did for Animal Crossing through the Word Tonic course.
That's me with a whale shark. Pretty cool, right?
The challenge was to reignite interest in the existing Animal Crossing community and to get them back to their Islands.

The Client: Nintendo Product: Animal Crossing New Horizons (video game) Brief: Animal Crossing New Horizons was the hottest game during the Pandemic - but the hype soon died down afterwards. I recently joined my local Library, something I should of done ages ago. I highly recommend joining yours!
There's just so many free resources and knowledge for anyone to access. Did I mention it's free?
Also it'll help your local community and who doesn't like helping people?
Beat the Fascists, get a Library Card!
In a world drowning in hate, fear and oil, the truth is more important than ever. Lies and biases are being spread with so much speed that we can hardly keep up. These false hoods are dangerous. Just look at the American election, and the whole ‘they’re eating the pets’ in Ohio lie spread by convicted felon Donald Trump, and JD Vance on their campaign trail.
