Good morning BlueSky.
I’m a dendrochronologist based in Edinburgh and work all over Scotland.

Here’s one of the ancient oaks at Dalkeith - where I was able to build an oak chronology back to the time of Mary Queen of Scots.

I’ll be sharing more on old trees, woods & timber heritage in Scotland.

Remains of the Mary Rose - Henry VIII’s warship that sunk in July 1545 at the Battle of the Solent. Raised in 1982, the ship is located and preserved at the Portsmouth Historic Dockyard site. 📸 My own. #Woodensday #MaryRose #Portsmouth

#thicktrunktuesday this tree guards the entrance to a bridge over the railway at Culloden Wood.
A large tree with a forked trunk stands at the entrance to a footbridge which is only visible to the viewer as 2 curved walls. To cross the bridge the tree must be stepped around. There is a large boulder at it's base. The tree is mostly in shade while the background is in full sunshine.

Tall old Scots pine stand in Muirhead Wood near Dundee 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿

Greatly varied historic policy woodland in the care of Woodland Trust Scotland. Great place for a walk with views of the silvery Tay from certain parts. An old drove road goes through it.

It would need a check on species and ring counts first in an assessment stage, then lots of samples if they were found to have dating potential. And funding! Historic map evidence probably a better guide.

Delighted to analyse the timbers of this wreck in Orkney 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿

The tree-rings revealed precise felling dates & timber provenance to target historical research on the when and where to ID the ship. Great teamwork with Wessex Archaeology, the Sanday community and my colleague @hamishdarrah.bsky.social

Forgive me some parental showing off but my son Ciaran is in the DARE Academy’s winning Riverboat Games team. Their Galactic Postal Servitude game proved very popular with the judges and the public. Excellent team work, congrats to them all.

Absolutely, while he probably wore a knitted swimming costume he would surely be surprised by the woolly hats, all the specialist paraphernalia and the term ‘wild swimming’!
