The Saxby Gale severely hit Atlantic Canada on October 4 & 5, 1869. On the 150th anniversary of this storm, @ryansnoddon.bsky.social wrote a nice summary of its evolution and impacts, including major flooding between Amherst and Sackville.

This can't be good: "Over the past three years, leading tech firms have committed more toward AI data centers, plus chips and energy, than it cost to build the interstate highway system over four decades, when adjusted for inflation."

Spending on AI Is at Epic Levels. Will It Ever Pay Off?
Tech companies are pouring hundreds of billions into data centers, taking on heavy debt, but current revenue is relatively tiny. Critics warn of a new dot-com bubble.

Good to know that AI hallucinations are here to stay. A few months ago, following one of its upgrades, ChatGPT's hallucination rate dropped from above 10% (11%? or 12%?) to slightly below 10% (9.6%?). I wonder if there's a theoretical limit to how low this AI hallucination rate can drop. 8%? 5%? 1%?

How does oxygen get from the ocean surface layer to the ocean's intermediate depth and bottom waters? 🧪🌊

I wrote a brief overview of the processes involved and the key regions of ocean ventilation:

Distortions in area are indicated by variations across the map in the area enclosed by Tissot indicatrices. Distortions in angles are indicated by departures from circularity of the Tissot indicatrices. I will provide more technical details about these maps in an upcoming blog post. #mapping
denis-gilbert.ca
Map projections make compromises between accurately representing either area, angles, or distances. Tissot indicatrices (blue circles & ellipses) inform us visually about map distortions. Standard parallels here are at 50°N and 70°N for the Albers and Lambert projections. 🧪

For Canadians who contemplate migrating their web hosting to servers physically located in Canada and subject to Canadian laws, hesitate no more! It's easier and faster than you might think. I did it this spring!

Yep, but the underlying rate of global warming has accelerated since 1998, so that the recent La Nina event will not mask warming for as long as it did back in the years following 1998. That would be my educated guess for the next few years.
denis-gilbert.ca
Right, we know this story all too well. Especially in the years following the 1997-1998 El Niño.
denis-gilbert.ca
Always interesting to see how successive El Niño events and La Niña events modulate the global warming time series. The 1997-1998, 2015-2016, 2018-2019 and 2023-2024 El Niño events are easily detectable as bumps in this graphic from @copernicusecmwf.bsky.social.

Something I learned in the last sentence: "while people can be fined for starting wildfires, they can also be fined for not reporting them."

I'm curious about the sentence on arson being the cause of multiple fires. Is there some legitimacy to this claim?
