The Moral Authority Of Animals
Chimpanzees in Arnhem’s Royal Burgers’ Zoo in the Netherlands had learned zookeepers’ rule that meals wouldn’t be served until all had assembled. But one day, as reported by Time magazine in 2007, two teenage chimps were more interested in staying out to play than coming in to eat. The others had to wait for hours, getting hungrier and angrier. When the two errant chimps finally showed up, zookeepers protected them from the others’ wrath in a separate enclosure overnight.

A lost generation of news consumers? Survey shows how teenagers dislike the news media
More than half of the teens surveyed believe journalists regularly engage in unethical behaviors like making up details or quotes in stories, paying sources, taking visual images out of context or doing favors for advertisers. Less than a third believe reporters correct their errors, confirm facts before reporting them, gather information from multiple sources or cover stories in the public interest — practices ingrained in the DNA of reputable journalists.

Here are some real statements from Pope Leo that many people who have been sharing fake memes seem to have been looking for.
Pope Leo XIV, who has made peace and unity priorities of his pontificate, emphasized that “the more we are reconciled, the more we Christians can bear credible witness to the Gospel of Jesus Christ, which is a proclamation of hope for all” and, in the words of Pope Francis, “a message of peace and universal fraternity that transcends the boundaries of our communities and nations.”

I Set A Trap To Catch Students Cheating With AI. The Result Was Deflating
My classes are generally small enough that I have time to get to know each student's writing. When a student who confuses "bias" and "biased" in a hand-written response later that day sends me an email later that day that uses "whom" and "betwixt," I notice. I can't prove a student is abusing AI, but I can certainly assess their ability to apply what they have learned through their writing process, and I weigh that process much more heavily than I did last year.

I can't stand Pinterest. I hate when Google sends me there, because Pinterest isn't a source, it's just a way to collect images from sources. I don't want to interact with Pinterest, I want the images. For years I used a Chrome plugin called "Unpinterested," which filters out the Pinterest results. Just now, I was stunned to learn that Jupiter isn't a "gas giant" -- it's mostly liquid hydrogen.

The problem isn’t that AI is artificial, it is that it’s not intelligence

#Opinion from Star contributor Rick Salutin
Rick Salutin: The problem isn’t that AI is artificial, it is that it’s not intelligence
AI does not think. It computes! Nobody thinks Google or their iPhone thinks, or is intelligent. Pseudo-intelligence would be a better term for AI.

The sparse facts about Shakespeare's family are far outnumbered by the questions they raise. Records show that in 1582 William Shakespeare, then 18, married 26-year-old Anne Hathaway, who was pregnant with their first child, Susanna. Three years later, their twins were born, called Judith and Hamnet, a name that at the time was interchangeable with Hamlet. In 1596, when he was just 11, Hamnet died.

On this day in 1948: The Tribune was on deadline. In the absence of election results, the newspaper assumed that New York Gov. Thomas E. Dewey (Republican) would sink incumbent Harry S. Truman (Democrat). He didn’t. And the blunder — “Dewey Defeats Truman” — appeared atop a single edition.
Today in Chicago History: ‘Dewey Defeats Truman’
Here’s a look back at what happened in the Chicago area on Nov. 3, according to the Tribune’s archives.

Amazon announced Tuesday that it will cut roughly 14,000 corporate jobs, or about 4% of its white-collar workforce, as part of a restructuring meant to “reduce bureaucracy” and “remove organizational layers,” according to a memo. In the memo, Beth Galetti, senior vice president of people experience at Amazon, said the cuts are designed to make the company leaner and more agile as it expands its investments in generative AI. In plain terms, it’s a bet that algorithms can handle many of the coordination, reporting, and decision-making functions once reserved for human managers. --Fortune
