When we live as hypocrites, we can be successful in the eyes of others. We can get things done and stack up our accomplishments, but we fail to become what is most fundamental.

We fail to be good.

Maybe we have forgotten this primal instinct.

We have spent so much time asking if we are prospering and productive people that we forgot to ask ourselves, “Are we becoming good people?”

We have been created in the image of God who is pure, untainted, infinite goodness. And all that God has made is good, indeed it is very good (Genesis 1:31). Though we may define what constitutes "the good" differently, don’t all people everywhere, deep down, want to live for some kind of good?

Jesus is not literally going to take you to a green field or to a still lake. Lewis' point is that if you cannot imagine these things, then you will not understand what is meant by “the Lord is my shepherd.”

In order to understand the meaning of God as our shepherd, we need an active imagination of green pastures, still waters, right paths, the valley of the shadow of death, the shepherd's staff, and a banquet table with enemies.

These are all poetic metaphors.

These “limits” aren’t limits on divine power. They’re clarifications about divine character.

God isn’t limitless power. God is love, pure goodness untainted by evil or absurdity.

This is the God made famous by Jesus.

Moral evils are not options for God. God cannot deny the goodness that defines who God is.

Logical absurdities are not options for God. God cannot make a round square or create a rock too heavy to lift.

...but it would disturb me if there was a wedding between the religious fundamentalists and the political right. The hard right has no interest in religion except to manipulate it."
