Black-and-white TVs with rabbit-ear antennas, a VHF dial and a UHF dial. Rotary phones that you leased from the phone company. Home computers with just a 5 1/4 in. floppy drive, or even just a tape drive, and memory measured in one or two digits’ worth of kilobytes.

I remember these things.

Photography is closer to collage than painting. It involves some elements that you can arrange. But it has its own constraints, of course, and its own techniques.

In the last few years, I’ve come to appreciate audiobooks as a feature of commuting. It’s a great way to take in a story. And the reader’s performance can add a dimension.

Take, for example, the recordings of the Lord of the Rings, voiced by the late Rob Inglis.
