Bataille provides a symbology that moves beyond representation and tries to describe how flows function. The book is short, scattered, and wears its Nietzschean influences proudly. In other words, my kind of book.

Trauma leaves deep scars that last for generations. This book really illustrated the difficulty that comes when trying to heal such wounds with beautiful analogies and narrative.

The way the book works up to a central traumatic moment before descending into a stream of consciousness really kept me intrigued. I really was moved by the portrayal of Black experiences in the mid 19th century in America in light of my dad’s family history as Black Americans.

While I was aware of the atrocity that was reconstruction’s failure, I was unprepared for this book. It was also a return to fiction for me. I had not read a book of fiction for some time.
