Fun fact #1: Before becoming the first Chancellor of West Germany, during a challenging period in German history, Konrad Adenauer invented a vegetarian sausage called the "Kölner Wurst".

@tante @johl Das funktioniert aber auch nur als "Kulturkampf", wenn man die Linke die Trolle füttert und sich auf deren Niveau herablässt anstatt wirklich über Politik zu sprechen.

@yoginho There are many anthropomorphisms for various software processes, including clients, servers, daemons (perhaps) where ascribing agency is less of a problem. I imagine the difference comes down to the notion that AI "agents" are so much more capable and autonomous?

Every time you say your chatbot
"thinks, reasons, means, understands, creates"
a little kitten dies.

And every time you say
"AI agent"
a whole species of cute furry animals goes extinct.

SO. JUST. DON'T!

Algorithms have no agency,
don't think, don't […]

"Entrepreneurs" (pronounced -noors) getting excited about Stoa philosophy on LinkedIn is a bit like gourmands ("foodies") getting excited about rice waffles.

I reviewed a paper and am now trying to fill out the publisher's reviewer form and the questions are honestly baffling:

- Does the content of the manuscript justify a review given the status of the subject area? --> You've already asked me to complete the review so I'd like to think that I […]

But surely the Uni needs to see for another four years whether you are really a suitable candidate and a good fit. And perhaps after four years they might suddenly need to stop teaching PolSci, so the position really has to be fixed-term for some time. Totally understandable.

Anyway, here […]

#lastboost @ruthpozuelo is re-implementing 100 charts in Python (matplotlib and pandas) that were originally created with Adobe Illustrator. What a great project.

I've come down with a nasty flu and decided to take the day off work to catch up on sleep. But then someone was wrong on the internet and I had to calculate some statistics on meat consumption. https://gist.github.com/henningninneh/22280d166fc1f80ca2d93dd53e6a27b9 #beentheredonethat
Time series plot on meat consumption in Austria. Continuous increase until the early 90s to roughly 300 grams per capita per day, then mostly decline. 2022: 2011 grams. Time series plot on meat consumption in selected EU countries. Austria and France top the chart for most of the time, but except in Poland and Italy, peak meat consumption was before the turn of the century. Bar chart on meat consumption per day and capita across the EU 28 countries on 2022. Austria sits square in the middle. Spaniards consume most meat (close to 300 grams), Bulgarians the least, namely less than 200 grams.

I'm trying to use an Elgato Stream Deck Pedal as a transcription pedal.

But which software – Mac OS, preferably #floss – to use?

(Tried using Whisper to auto-transcribe interview recordings, and it takes about as much time to correct the transcript afterwards as transcribing manually with a […]

I'm teaching my judicial politics module at UCL again this term which means that I'm keen on new resources for students. In particular, let me know if you published a dataset on courts/judicial politics/legal mobilization and it is not yet listed here: michalovadek.github.io/judicial-pol...

I've had two different EU officials tell me, basically, "Back when you were at Google you guys said 'no' to us all the time and we hated it. But now we get newer platforms saying 'yes' all the time and... that kind of creeps us out."
