Happy Halloween from TRU! Let's avoid the biggest fright of the night... a ghost bus!

A ghost bus is one scheduled to appear in the tracker, but doesn't actually show up.

Help report ghost buses by calling DDOT or SMART when they happen, or using the Transit App's Go.

We had a great rally this morning with our friends at Amalgamated Transit Union (ATU) Local 26.

Call Mayor Duggan today at (313) 224-3400 and urge him to raise wages for DDOT workers so we can #DoubleDDOT!
October 8, 2025 at 6:30 PM
🚍 Detroiters deserve reliable bus service. DDOT workers deserve fair pay. Mayor Duggan must settle worker contracts and pay competitive wages to keep Detroit moving!
📣 Join us TOMORROW, October 8th to demand action: bit.ly/DDOTRally

For Marjorie of Big Rapids, transit matters because "I don't want my car to own ME". And Jessica of Paris agrees.

Transit will lose money from last year in this budget - leaving Up North riders stranded. Will our state leaders act to fund transit?

For Ryan, transit allows her husband and her to share a car, saving money.

Transit is set to lose money from last year in this budget - meaning people like Ryan will burden higher costs. Will our state leaders act to fund transit?

For Dawn Hammontree, her life as she knows it wouldn't exist without transit, as she can't drive.

Transit is set to lose money from last year in this budget - meaning people like Dawn are stranded. Will our state leaders act to fund transit?

By the late 2010s, TRU began inviting riders to share a longer form of their story in blogs on our website. These are our current Transit Voices. With more staff capacity, we could interview riders and create longer stories, and even videos! Numbers matter, but so do people.

In 2008, TRU launched the “Faces of Transit” project, the next step of uplifting rider voices. Many people knew people took transit in Detroit, but didn’t know how many diverse people did: We sought to change that

Our first organized effort began in 2001 as Riders’ Voice, funded by a grant from the Archdiocese of Detroit. The team was a 21 member committee, primarily made up of City of Detroit bus riders. Riders were given a journal to write down their stories.

For 25 years, TRU has been highlight riders voices and the faces behind transit. It's riders coming together in 1999 and 2000, sharing their stories, and helping each other make metro Detroit transit more accountable that got us here. 🧵

On Feb. 19th, 1999, 14 year old Stephen Hands wrote this Op-Ed, about the need for transit investment for Detroit. With help from his family, the people inspired by this would organize into TRU. This news article started it all!

“To live in a walkable place with good public transportation would be amazing, but feels impossible or at least prohibitively expensive in the US”

Jack Sullivan, a 23 year old from Tennessee, reflects on the desires many Gen Z Americans have.

Paul Jones III, an urban planner, badly wanted to stay in Detroit, but he had to move elsewhere to progress his career due to the lack of thought towards public transportation.

Many Detroiters have this issue, in large part due to a lack of transportation options to work.
