Hello sudden influx of lawyers starting to follow me! Better get back to posting about law stuff…

Starting w/ Devan’s Rules of Professionalism:
1. Be competent
2. Don’t be incompetent
3. Don’t be a dick*

*taking a firm, principled, position based on facts or law is not (necessarily) being a dick.

A tale in two parts:

Honestly, I kind of like the red line on black. Pretty slick. But I will miss the Santa suits too.

ICYMI back in September more than 100 people joined our Rally and Ride for Eglinton demanding the City deliver on its commitment to build bike lanes Eglinton now. Delaying will drive up costs, disrupt traffic twice, and risk provincial interference under Bill 212.

I think the title page of my presentation for young lawyers in 2 weeks probably sets the tone for what the next 45 minutes will be like:
A powerpoint slide titled "Artificial Intelligence and the law, maybe the Luddites were on to something"

Some might say, the most powerful public interest group:
A clip from the movie Star Trek: A Voyage Home where the Enterprise crew had to go back in time to bring whales to the future to save Earth.

Another one to save for my presentation on AI and the Law in two weeks…

Whoopsie. AI hallucination in a recent fed court opinion from last week?

Camping is great, but boy is it nice to be home.

Fuck yes, science!
amitha.bsky.social
Wonderful news. I hope this is able to help a lot of people (and isn't too expensive to obtain).

Wonderful news. A salutary reminder of the absolute benefits of scientific progress, and the absolute evil of conspiracist bollocks.

I realized I should have add @ausmalik.bsky.social as this impacts her ward. I would love some clarity on what “modifying” the cycle-tracks south of Dundas will entail.
devanmarr.bsky.social
So this sounds like #Toronto is removing the bike lanes south of Dundas on University and making the intersections more dangerous? LOVE that, @mayoroliviachow.ca and @diannesaxe.bsky.social

I would love an explanation. I’m sure @cycletoronto.bsky.social and @bikewaysto.bsky.social aould too.
devanmarr.bsky.social
Clarification would be nice because “bikeway” can still just mean “shared facility” which the TO Infrastructure guide says is inappropriate in “high volume areas”.
devanmarr.bsky.social
It’s all bad. But this would be particularly bad because you lose the connection to Richmond and Adelaide and have further conflict with turning vehicles.
devanmarr.bsky.social
They make a point to distinguish “bikeways” from College to Dundas and “cycle tracks” from Dundas to Adelaide. The “cycle tracks” are being “modified” to add the turn lanes/vehicle lane. So we will have to see what “modified” means but I suspect it’s a painted slip lane…Hope I’m wrong.
devanmarr.bsky.social
My interpretation of this is that the lanes south of Dundas are being removed (or downgraded from cycle tracks) to accommodate the turn lanes and vehicle lane.

I would love to be corrected.

Judging by the title, I suspect I'll be presenting something very similar. And when I say "2/10 it will try to destroy your career", I'm talking less about "stealing your job" and more "You're the next Ko v. Li."
devanmarr.bsky.social
...my current thesis is two parts:
1. 8/10 times, it produces B- work. The other 2 times, it tries to end your career.

2. Our professional "problem" is providing consistently accurate, precise, and reliable advice. "AI" is unlikely to "solve" this because it's (currently) none of those things.
