I am aware that, as an investment management co CFO and COO, I’m perhaps the worst, or the best, person to opine on this. But here goes anyway 🧵https://www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2025/jul/29/rachel-reeves-save-less-to-invest-policy-brilliant-or-disaster
Rachel Reeves’ ‘save less to invest’ policy could be brilliant for ordinary Britons – or a disaster | Hilary Osborne
People know about savings. But investing in stocks and shares? Not so much. Ministers have a duty to be clear about the benefits and risks, says Hilary Osborne, the Guardian’s money and consumer edito...

Also: the Right’s ideas don’t make any fucking money either.

As a chartered accountant and a CFO I can attest that what they do bears no relation to any business activity I recognise. Nor also to my English degree either, to be sure.

Trying to remember the ancient history of my university choices:
1) most important thing was good university
2) second most important thing was getting a 1st or 2:1
3) Least important was the subject, as long as you could get 2)
4) Scottish university, so final choice not made until 3rd year anyhow

I know statistics are poorly understood and are misused. But facts matter

Between the 1991, 2001, 2011 and 2021 Census *every* ethnic group in the UK has become *less* geographically segregated and *all* groups, majority and minorities, are more likely to interact with people not like them

Worth it just for Jenny Marx’s question game with Marx and Engels at the end…

David is slightly unfair. There is a clear difference here.

Conservatives and Reform plan to forcibly expel large numbers of people who are legal, permanent residents of migrant origin. The BNP proposal is voluntary.

This below is from the 2005 BNP manifesto.

Spot the difference with current Tory and Reform policy.

Probably of relevance only to me, but the news that they are going back on the road reduced me to tears. Have missed them so much. #Rush

I used this: you need to hugely reduce the butter in the crumble topping, and pushing the pulp through a sieve is a MASSIVE PAIN. But it is worth the effort

OK, let's take this seriously. I had an odd half an hour and via Apple Books had a quick look at the three claims I knew most about - two re the post-Brexit bilateral preferential trade agreements replicated from the EU versions and one about cheaper bananas. All are wrong or wildly implausible. 1/n

TBH it’s just good old fashioned English crumble, with some rolled oats. That’s isn’t *far* from streusel though

We had our first quince harvest this year (just five fruit!), but the tart we made with them was a revelation!

Disagree: legislators who pass unenforceable or unenforced (usually by not resourcing enforcement) legislation bring the law into disrepute. Westminster (for example) is full of people who think “something must be done”, and passing laws is “something”.

Just… awful.

I didn't know until we buried my mother, so probably most people here don't know: Jewish cemeteries strongly recommend that you get insurance for the headstone.

Because the cemeteries are so often desecrated, the gravestones smashed.

This is up there with: families/guardians of disabled women in care homes regularly give said long term contraception as they’re so often raped.
The shame this world carries as normal.
Shocking.

…and how do measure those against Steve Reich’s Jacob’s Ladder???

I haven’t seen that bias in him: I don’t think he’s like Chris Mason for example.

Excellent, if depressing, article by @lewisgoodall.com - describes exactly the lack of any underlying, driving political values or objectives behind Starmer or Labour.

The near consensus view was that Keir Starmer's conference speech was his best yet. I heard something different. I think it was born of a profound weakness- and in its own way set up his own future failure.
