A Better DFL condemns the extrajudicial killing of a legal observer that happened in Minneapolis this morning. Constitutional observers are a vital part of preserving the legal rights of our immigrant neighbors in Minneapolis, and this killing must be investigated and prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law. We mourn the loss of our neighbor taken from us by this violence, and stand with those impacted by the terror and fear ICE seeks to sow in our communities. Many of us grew up learning about the horrors of Nazi Germany - some of us may have experienced them firsthand. We know through the stories told by victims and survivors alike that while they started attacking one class of people, it did not stop there. When we say “never again,” we mean it - we must be a bulwark against these evil and illegal acts in our communities and we agree with Mayor Frey that “ICE needs to get the fuck out of our city.” Further, we call on our elected leaders who have cast votes and spoken in support of ICE and legislation such as the Laken Riley act to immediately advocate for a full repeal of funding for ICE and to ensure those who have perpetrated such crimes against humanity are held accountable with the full effect of the law. Friends: I know that the events today can leave us feeling hopeless and helpless. One thing that has buoyed me through this chaotic year of this administration is focusing on the local issues that I can change. Pouring my energy into that.

Caucusing is one way to do that.

Osman said the doors are always locked for safety, and the staff was on high alert due to the Trump administration’s actions against Somalis for the past month. He said they don’t do “walk-in appointments” but there were children inside at the time and their cameras prove it. “You cannot see anyone from outside,” Osman said. Shirley was there for about 40 seconds before a shift supervisor heard what he was saying and tried to close the door but Shirley was holding onto it, so she had to pull it shut hard. Since the video went viral, the center has been bombarded with phone calls from across the country, with people talking about congresswoman Ilhan Omar and saying things like “give us our money back,” he said. State workers visited the center Dec. 29, in what Osman said was the fifth audit this year.

Yet if we’re so eager to be diverse and accept others, then shouldn’t we widen the circle and allow these old, dead, white males to re-enter our reading lists? And in doing so, might we not further diversify our minds and expand our knowledge by pondering the wisdom they offer?
