It was quiet in the kitchen, deep in the bowels of Zapolyarny, and it was warm; the ovens were kept hot year-round. The staff wouldn't dare return without being told to. They were perfectly alone. Childe's fingers tasted like fish, moving inside his mouth, skimming his tongue, his teeth. It didn't disgust Scaramouche the way it should've. The smell of yeast, then sweat. Childe's breath hot on his throat, the flex of muscle in his forearm, the twist of his wrist. Hands pressed to Scaramouche's skin, fingers slick and shining, slipping in then out. Scaramouche braced for the cut, but it never came. "Is it good?" Childe asked. Scaramouche swallowed. The fish was delicate, buttery in his mouth, delicious. Childe watched him like it sated his own hunger, like he knew the answer without needing to hear it. But he wanted it all the same, he wanted Scaramouche to say it. So Scaramouche said, "Not particularly."

fav books of the year! i managed to read 12 translated books and consequently ended up reading many seminal russian authors (would recommend), and lots of short stories (would highly recommend)

Oliver Ready - Really fun to chew on and truly laugh-out-loud funny Lost Souls Meet Under a Full Moon, Mizuki Tsujimura - Grief lives where mundanity & magic overlap Charming Billy, Alice McDermott - The narrative voice, the memories within memories…amazing The Unhappiness of a Single Man, Franz Kafka - Weird and wonderful and very funny Brideshead Revisited, Evelyn Waugh - So beautiful. I need to talk to a gay ex-catholic STAT Ancillary Justice (+ the whole Imperial Radch series), Ann Leckie - I. Love. Non-human protagonists!!!!!!

Annoyed, Mydei sits back and folds his arms. Phainon still has that stupid, poleaxed expression on, like he can't quite get his eyes to focus, but then he rolls onto his side, away from Mydei, and curls up like a dying bug. "Next time," Mydei hates himself a little for giving so much away in two words, "you'll do what I want." Wheezing, Phainon says, "Don't threaten me with a good time." "O-oh, I have your delivery." The woman ducked and retrieved the rope she'd dropped and gave it a tug. Ponderously, a large brown cow stepped into Phainon's apartment. Phainon stared at it. It stared back with wet, black eyes. He pointed at it and said, "That's not mine." "Show me what you do when you think of me." Phainon's hand flew to his cock and gripped the base of it, hard, silently pleading with whatever higher power was listening that he wouldn't blow his load immediately. "So tightly?" Mydei asked, brows pinched. "If you were truly a man," Mydei declared, at top volume and apropos of nothing, "you'd fuck me in the ass." "Wuh—? Huh?" Phainon fumbled his wooden training sword and nearly dropped it. This was not how any sane person started a conversation. They were in the public training hall, for gods sake, where Kephale and all their children could witness Phainon having an aneurysm.
