I have digipaks mixed in and they definitely help as markers. Also in my case, it's one long shelf and they also help keep the ones in plastic sleeves upright.

I remember seeing a copy of this in the early 90s in one of the Record & Tape Exchange shops in Notting Hill, with a note on it that said something like "the one that actually has songs on it".
