Day 9 and today, my 39th birthday, I’ve got New Zealand death metal band Ulcerate’s 2024 album, “Cutting The Throat of God.” Yes, it goes just as hard as the name suggests. From start to finish, all gas, no brakes.

Day 8 and today: Doom.

Hooded Menace and their 2012 record, “Effigies of Evil.” I’m halfway through Christopher Buehlman’s ‘Between Two Fires’ and this is a great soundtrack, if you know you know.

Day 7 and we’ve got Conan’s latest album, “Violence Dimension” (2025), a knuckle-dragging slugfest of a musical romp. This is one of those records you keep queued up for leg day, when you know you’ve got deep backsquats and deadlifts on the horizon.

Day 6 and it’s Havukruunu’s 2017 release, “Kelle Surut Soi.” This is a Finnish black metal band that proudly sings in their native language—I have absolutely no idea what they’re saying, but it rips. Hauntingly atmospheric, orchestral arrangements and vocals balanced by thrashing riffs.

Day 5: The 2015 debut from British black metal quartet Ninkharsag, “Blood of Celestial Kings.” I’m a sucker for a concept album and that’s all these guys put out. Their 2021 and 2025 follow-ups are all rich in mythic storytelling and bone-crushing riffs that give Mastodon a run for their money.

One of life’s great joys is sharing it with a little critter whose trust in you is so deep that they happily curl up to fall asleep on your legs. If you stop and think about this arrangement for more than a minute, it’s striking how rare and beautiful it is.

Day 4 and it’s “Labyrinthine,” the 2025 debut album from Faetooth, an all-woman trio whose doom-inspired “fairy metal” (their phrase) is kinda perfect for this time of winter. Grey skies, snow, ominous portents, lurking threats. A great record to put on as you read some medieval horror on the couch.

This is a truly incredible piece of musical theater and you owe to it yourselves to listen to it.

I personally find this form of posting, which I see everywhere among a certain brand of politics account on here, both distasteful and incredibly unproductive in the current moment. Save it for Facebook.

Day 3 and we’ve got Scorching Tomb’s first full-length album, “Ossuary” — not to be confused with the Wisconsin death metal band by the same name — featuring a killer guest spot from my new favorite Columbus band, Sanguisugabogg.

Punishing album from start to finish. Highly recommend.

The second track on Cryptopsy’s “As Gomorrah Burns” (2023) begins with a primal scream, “I WAS PROMISED A UTOPIA!” and that about sums up the record: anguish and anger for a world promised but never realized as it crashes down around us. Fitting.

New album for today and I’m struck by the fact that Cattle Decapitation put out an album about human-driven mass extinction with a song called “Bring Back the Plague”…in 2019.

Please find a new fucking meme.

Posting new (to me) metal albums I’m listening through to hold myself accountable on this dive into new music.

Track one of Glorious Depravity’s latest is delightfully on the nose.

This is some of the most deranged shit I’ve ever seen from a USG account excluding the openly Nazi agitprop DHS keeps posting.

This fucken rips man. The background tracks of my inner monologue these days.

Fun fact: we drive on the left side of the road in the United States Virgin Islands, a holdover from Danish colonial administration that we never bothered changing. We’re not even consistent within our own borders.
