I've read most of the scholarship about US policing since the early 20th century. What you learn from this is that violence is inherent. You cannot "separate" out violence from policing. Police in the U.S. are violence workers.

Day 7 and we’ve got Conan’s latest album, “Violence Dimension” (2025), a knuckle-dragging slugfest of a musical romp. This is one of those records you keep queued up for leg day, when you know you’ve got deep backsquats and deadlifts on the horizon.

“One day, a woman wrote to me on Signal, asking me not to respond. She lived alone, she messaged, and planned to die that weekend. Before she did, she wanted at least one person to understand: Trump had unraveled the government, and with it, her life.” @hannahnatanson.bsky.social essay:
I am The Post’s ‘federal government whisperer.’ It’s been brutal.
One reporter’s effort to show how Trump was transforming government brought her 1,168 new sources — and nearly broke her.

one of the weirdest things about the current moment is how the national media have to pretend like they don't know what this is about. official government social media accounts are posting about racially cleansing America and they have to pretend like it's not clear who the bad guy is.

The FBI has opened an investigation into alleged “extremism” by Renee Nicole Good even as federal authorities block or delay inquiries into the ICE agent who killed her, prompting multiple Justice Department officials to resign in protest.

Day 6 and it’s Havukruunu’s 2017 release, “Kelle Surut Soi.” This is a Finnish black metal band that proudly sings in their native language—I have absolutely no idea what they’re saying, but it rips. Hauntingly atmospheric, orchestral arrangements and vocals balanced by thrashing riffs.

Day 5: The 2015 debut from British black metal quartet Ninkharsag, “Blood of Celestial Kings.” I’m a sucker for a concept album and that’s all these guys put out. Their 2021 and 2025 follow-ups are all rich in mythic storytelling and bone-crushing riffs that give Mastodon a run for their money.

The story we’ve told about ourselves til now has been one of progress, albeit wildly uneven and glacially slow, but progress nonetheless.

These people want to flip that on its head into Lost Cause 2.0: white supremacist grievance and the return of segregation.

Whose story do you want to win?
