NEW STUDY: How much CO2 can we safely store in geological formations?

In a new @nature.com study, we cross-check established academic and industry estimates with various risk factors.

We find a prudent geological CO2 storage limit that is about 10x smaller. /1

Clean energy is growing fast—but demand is growing faster.
Until we tackle energy demand, we’re not truly transitioning.
Shared this new figure at my keynote in Nara, Japan.

Droughts keep appearing in the news—but they’re more than a lack of rain.

IPCC AR6 shows rising crop loss, water stress & wildfires, especially in low-income regions.

We must track all types: meteorological, agricultural, hydrological.

We always celebrate the #ozone layer restoration as the biggest environmental sccess story.

But is it safe?

No - new threats: space junk, space launches.

We think we are inventing the #circularEconomy?

This Japanese wooden temple (no nails!) has been sequstering that carbon in the wood for 1400 years, and is even earthquake-safe.

It does need to be refurbished every 300 years...

Rousing keynote speech from @dianaurge.bsky.social at #IEW25, calling for disruptive change in energy modelling - from depicting single technology solutions to whole systems transformations - urban, buildings, materials, mobility systems.

What makes a #city happy?

US's happiest city has 180 parks, 22 lakes, & prides in 2/3rd of its population commuting or running errands by bike.

Things that make low-GHG and climate resilient cities also make them happiest.

#ClimateAction does not need to be sacrifice

📄 @fgilardi.bsky.social created this template for writing abstracts several years ago, and I’ve tried to follow Fabrizio‘s suggestions ever since.

Everyone agrees that this issue is really important. But we do not know much about this specific question, although it matters a great deal, for these reasons. We approach the problem from this perspective. Our research design focuses on these cases and relies on these data, which we analyze using this method. Results show what we have learned about the question. They have these broader implications.

*Historic*: China’s CO2 emissions fell for 1st time ever over more than a year despite rapid power demand growth, because of the spectacular consistency of the growth in China’s clean power generation

Incredibly meaningful on so many levels

Even more simply: we should cross that bridge of we get to it. We are VERY far from decarbonising energy. The RES we have been adding is not even sufficient to just cover the increasing demand... this is why we need efficiency! So that it is easier for the RES we can do to decarbonise more supply

Finally - paying reviewers of journal articles being considered.

Not ideal, but it would be a significant improvement over the prevailing exploitational business model of scientific publishing: u pay for your intellectual creation to profit others, a lot...
