So, at Amazon, we have a huge ecosystem of internal systems that have all sorts of goofy names and weird interdependencies. A colleague of mine left, I inherited a bunch of his technical assets, and now I have to go around shutting things down, deleting things, etc. But the process is always […]

@chrisjrn @glyph @chrisjrn.fyi I've already addressed the matter of uploading edits. If you want to continue to discuss that aspect, how about we do it in a separate branch of the conversation? You can reply to my post above where I talked about uploading content and whether it would be used as […]

If you're trying to get folks to ditch #bluesky in favor of the fediverse, maybe instead of sending them needlessly complicated explainers, something like this might be useful.

Hey, Bluesky, I see that some of you are thinking about giving the fediverse (which Mastodon is part of) a/another try.

Instead of sharing a yet another complicated "how to get started" guide, here's a bit about who's actually on there.

@glyph @chrisjrn @chrisjrn.fyi In this case, with respect to the idea of incorporating incompatibly licensed code into my project, I would indeed rely on the suggestions being too small and not original enough to incur copyright violations, and also on the process producing the same code I would […]

@chrisjrn @glyph @chrisjrn.fyi Not necessarily. (I assume you're talking about *my* edit history, right?)

ML models like this don't necessarily use the edit history as training data; it could be used only to query the model and then discarded, which would eliminate any concerns about other code […]

@glyph @chrisjrn.fyi I accept the suggestions if they match what I was going to type anyway. Or if it's not exact but close, I might "accept" in the sense of hitting Tab, and then I go back and change the parts it got wrong, if it takes fewer/easier keystrokes than manually typing out what I […]

@glyph @chrisjrn.fyi What AI suggestions am I supposedly proposing as PRs?
diazona.techhub.social.ap.brid.gy
@chrisjrn.fyi Interesting proposal they're making there.

I've been tinkering with the AI-assisted autocompletion in #pycharm recently - only on open source projects so no concerns about code privacy - and it's been slightly helpful but overall a very mixed bag. It'll be interesting to see if it […]

Yes, when I pay for this app (which shall remain nameless for now) I definitely want to see stats on how many paid features I've been using in a recurring modal popup that blocks me from accessing said paid features 🤦

Hello all.

Mastodon does NOT solicit paid verification.

Looks like there’s a new version of the fake ‘Mastodon Team’ phishing attempts that are targeting new users by replying to Introduction posts.

Again, please alert new users, and please report and […]

A phishing post with a link for the unwary from a new so-called ‘Mastodon Team’ account. It reads “ Hello, dear Mastodon user! We've noticed your activity on our forum and are ready to offer you cooperation. To proceed, please complete the verification using the link that our assistant will send you below. [bad link] Once verified, you will be able to receive monthly payments from our company. Thank you for everything, Mastodon!”

Speaking of image alt text, as a photographer who tries to put care into this, I would really love it if there were a single standard EXIF field in which alt text could be embedded and from which the text was reliably extracted when the image was uploaded. It would be much easier to write a […]

@RachelThornSub That is interesting! If anyone (else) pointed it out during the stream, I missed it.

It makes a lot more sense than "Thrilling Bloody Sword" as a title, that's for sure

Also, I’m sure others have already pointed it out, but there is nothing in the original title about “blood.” It actually means “Divine Sword Moves Mountains and Rivers” (神劍動山河). Considering that it was made for children (I think? Were they even thinking of a target audience?), “bloody” was a […]
