The hard work is just beginning. Implementation will be the true marker of whether the transitional court can demonstrate the restorative power of amnesties that allowed FARC to demobilise.

Peace efforts in the future depend on consolidating these processes in the coming days.

As #Colombia enters an election year, with security at the top of voters' concerns, the public reaction to these sentences will be key to shaping ongoing future peace processes.

Whether in favor or opposed, candidates will likely see the verdicts as a standard to judge by.

There is also the question of who will organize projects and pay. The JEP has asked the entirety of government – local, regional, national - to think about and propose projects where defendants could work.

On the one hand, these sanctions breathe new life into the 2016 agreement, whose primary opponents have loudly criticized the JEP’s delay in laying down sentences.

Yet these sentences are also unlikely to please critics, who would like harsher penalties for such grave crimes.

Today marks a year since the Sinaloa Cartel’s two largest factions, Chapitos and Mayos, fell into a deadly wave of infighting after the former kidnapped and rendered “El Mayo” Zambada to U.S. authorities. I visited the state recently for @crisisgroup.org and this is some of what I saw.

People need to realize that with the lethal strike in the Caribbean, the US President is asserting the prerogative to kill outside the law.

Even if you care nothing for the people killed aboard that boat, such a claim of presidential power should alarm you.
