One of the blind spots I mean to get to grips with one day is 'brown gulls'. The job was bad enough, then they invented 'Yellow-legged Gulls' to make it even more difficult.

Whenever I see them they are usually 200 yards away, typically circling the place I've just left.

I didn't know about that, but it does explain something we thought a bit odd at the time we saw it. We came across a very distant Kingfisher on the rocky shoreline in Ayr last November. Happily fishing from the rocks and evidently enjoying the changed diet.

On the Cattle Egret, I had the pleasure of finding one while walking the dog on boxing day 2024, about 100 yards from home in Urmston. He was kind enough to stick around to make the 2025 dog walking list too.

You can see the resemblance to be fair. Love to catch up with any of them again if I get the chance.

It probably does make sense if you know the species but it's not a bird or family I've ever heard of before. Impressive animal.
