On a trip to the US in 1985, I picked up his book This Hallowed Ground. I still regard it as the best single-volume account of the ACW.

There’s precedent. In early 1944, when German troops were surrounded near Cherkassy and a desperate rescue was being organised, Hitler summoned his generals so he could urge them to show greater fanaticism and determination.
Not sure copying Hitler is ever good, but hey, that’s where we are.
