The fact that they are willing to return to the porch and eat from the food station where they were trapped less than 30 minutes after being released is very encouraging. In time we might be friends again, and they may come for pets and eat Churu from the tube instead of the porch. I’ll take it. 2/2
Three cats at the far end of a porch. The nearest to the camera is young calico Magenta, with her left ear tip clearly visible. Behind her is brother Eddie, in the sunshine, his ear tip also visible with the light showing through it. Behind him on the step leading to the yard is their calico mother with an orange stripe up her nose. She does not have an ear tip, as she has not yet been trapped for spay. It’s my hope to get her this week.

Well, they don’t hate me too much, and have reunited with their mom. (She’s the one in the back without the ear tip, which I hope to change soon.)

Everyone including big sister Columbia (likely from Mom Cat’s spring litter) has come for breakfast, so the whole family’s back together. /1

They were both ear tipped, and neighbor has been educated as to what TNR/ear-tipping means, so once we get the other two calicos he should hopefully not find any more kittens in his boat. /2
A 6 month old black kitten cuddled up behind a 6 month old calico in a canvas playpen. Both left ears have had a small piece of the tip amputated, indicating they have been through a TNR program and are sterilized and vaccinated.

Thank you all again, so much, for all your donations and support. You all took care of a not insignificant amount of the vet bill for these kittens, as well as food, treats, and litter. I can’t thank you enough. I couldn’t have done any of this without you. 3/3
A 6 month old calico kitten cuddles next to her very bonded black brother in a large canvas playpen. Magenta and Eddie were fixed and vaccinated today, as well as ear tipped, indicating to anyone who may care for them in the future that they have been through a TNR program and are sterilized.

And here we have one of the pitfalls of setting up a food station for community/colony cats /3:
A black and white trail cam photo taken just before Big Poppa arrived of a large raccoon stealing food from one of the food station bowls. 11/23/25 At 10:14PM. He came back later in the wee hours to trash the food station and drag the bowls all over the back porch. I really hope he moves on/the cats keep him run off. They’re not called “trash pandas” for nothing.

More excellent progress throughout the day and a breakthrough at the evening session. Both ate wet food as it was offered, and Churu, came for pets and attention, AND played with toys, all while we were visiting. This is a huge step forward for these two semi-feral kittens. So, so proud of them. /1

More updates from Friend M!

Rocky and Janet get their morning Churu and the Hobbits have been upgraded from playpen to what she calls “the Big Room.” (Their playpen was already big!)

They’re all gaining good weight and having the time of their lives. I’m so glad she could take them.
Two black kittens 4-5 months old on separate tiered cat beds. Rocky is on the top while Janet is below. A hand holding a pink Churu tube holds it for Janet while Rocky leans toward the camera, reminding Friend M that he’s there too. (Rocky is a food beast. All your foods belong to us.) Four 5 week old kittens play in a large enclosure among fleece blankets and a fancy hooded tube bed. Frodo, of course, has claimed first spot in the soft new space while Pippin attempts to climb the side. Tiny Sam, who is still tiny, is looking much more robust and very much cleaner as he’s packing on the much needed grams and not being bled to death by fleas. Merry looks over Sam’s shoulder at what Pippin in doing and is clearly about to do the same thing, because he’s Pippin.

I cleaned and sanitized the bathroom where the Hobbits were temporarily lodged and as I was putting things back in order I noticed my left arm.

Some kittens don’t appreciate baths. 2/2
A picture of my left arm. Next to my green paw print tattoo (along with the name “Bee” who passed in 2016; she was my bestie and a very special girl) is a series of approximately sixteen small scratches and puncture wounds from tiny kitten claws grabbing my arm as I bathed the four flea-infested kittens of the Hobbit litter yesterday. There are more on the other side, for a total of about twenty-two. The price of battling fleas and saving tiny lives.

Magenta and Eddie are resentful of their unjust imprisonment (Eddie tried to do the mean growl when I changed their water but he didn’t actually mean it). Magenta has hissed, but it’s fear not anger. They’re not spicy at all, and I’ve spent weeks befriending them. They’ll come around. I hope. /1

Updates Friend M promised!

Rocky and Janet in their fabulous huge enclosure with gourmet breakfast, and The Hobbits in their palatial playpen all clean and happy.
Two black cats sitting on a large climbing shelf in a custom built enclosure around a flat ceramic dish with two portions of wet food with Churu paste in the middle. Janet is on the right (black with a few white chest hairs and a shaved tummy from her spay two days ago), while Rocky the food lover digs into the breakfast. These two are going to get snapped up the moment they go up for adoption. A group of four small kittens clearly having had a second round of baths as they are all cleaner than when they were last night at their drop off. Top left to bottom right are Frodo (gray and white, blue eyes, pink nose), Sam (smallest orange boy), Pippin (largest cream orange boy), and Merry darker gray with black nose and white mustache). They are in a cuddle pile on a gray fleece blanket next to two new toys. They all look offended at being disturbed for breakfast.

It’s a terrible pic and you can’t see much past the mesh but there are two half-grown kittens in there.

How it started/How it’s going I guess.
A picture from a trail camera dated 11-15-25 showing two 4-5 month old semi-feral kittens at a feeding station on my back porch. The one on the left is a black male, and next to him is a calico. These are Eddie and Magenta, siblings to Rocky and Janet who were both just graduated from the James studio socialization and sterilization program (S&S program?). I’m really hoping these two will be as successful. They could be too far gone into feraldom despite the last three weeks of trust building. Two dark shapes circled in red obscured by the mesh of a canvas playpen. One sits in the beige litter box at the back and the other even farther back crouched behind it. There are bowls of wet food and water at the front, and with spilled dry kibble. We will sort out the mess later when they’ve had some time to adjust to the new accommodations.

Merry and Pippin, also like their namesakes, are always getting into trouble together. Whatever Pippin does, Merry follows, and Pippin makes poor life choices. /3

We did weigh and name them. The littlest guy is 200g behind the biggest boy (despite original ID, they are ALL boys), but he’s active and bright eyed, so I have high hopes for his future.

Meet the Hobbits: Frodo, Sam, Merry, and Pippin.

Frodo and Sam are, like their namesakes, always together. /2
A tiny orange kitten (the size of a three week old despite being five weeks) cuddled up with a larger fluffy Siamese. Sam is the tiny orange and Frodo is the Siamese. They are cuddled up on a bed covered with a white fleece blanket with rainbows on it.

Thanks to everyone’s overwhelming generosity, I can afford to get a couple doses.

I so admire your colony work. Last year I helped with a barn colony. Over 8 months we did 30+ cats and feral kittens. We were able to socialize another 15 kittens. I ended up keeping a little disabled girl.

The size of a three week old kitten at five weeks, she grew up gorgeous and healthy. After weeks of working with her four times daily on physical therapy exercises, she can walk, run, climb, and even jump very short distances. Her name is Pequeña Buena Suerte de Gato. Pico for short. She’s now eighteen months old.

I have two older ones in my studio I had fixed and vaxxed today, two more from the same litter on the back porch I’ve been making friends with for the past three weeks who will be scooped up and moved to the studio when the other go to another foster on Saturday, and then two other ferals to TNR. /2

So, um, if anyone has any pennies in the couch cushions they could send my way, my neighbor just found these in his shed. He knows I “help kittens” and well, here we are.

They’re underweight and filthy, and the smallest one worries me, but we’ll get him bathed and fed and figure things out. /1

I saw Stock Photo Meme Guy in an actual ad in the wild and I’m not sure if they used the photo ironically or if they genuinely used that particular image to promote their product.

I censored their business and product name to protect the guilty.
