A new kind of diorama crafted in the 21st century. Not a wilderness scene but an urban backyard. A coyote has caught a pet cat for its next meal. The backdoor to this family home remains ominously ajar. A photo of the late cougar, P-22, at the Natural History Museum of Los Angeles County. On a normal day, visitors would see the Hollywood Sign aglow behind him; on this day, only tributes, scrawled on a rainbow of post-it notes. Visitors, mourning his passing, transformed the wall into a collective eulogy for the "inspiring Angeleno."

Doing a fridge worth of dishes—because !what joy! my fridge died and the room temp leftovers aren’t worth risking—but at least there’s a jolly view. The forbidden circus beckons.
View out my kitchen window: a half dozen skinny palm trees and other greenery. The red and blue striped fumigation tent across the street looks like such fun. Why are they so inviting?

Scenes from the periphery of Race the Wave, a tsunami evacuation fun run in Santa Cruz. We started on the wharf, the one that partially collapsed last December, and raced to higher ground where an emergency preparedness resource fair greeted folks at the finish line. (I live in the inundation zone.)

Drumming commenced at 4pm PDT and I've since competed a tricky paragraph. Correlation or causation? Both, perhaps. It certainly makes writing less lonely, knowing (hearing) that someone else is putting in the work.

Also, a pitch for Jenny Price's classic "The Plastic Pink Flamingo," which invites readers to think about art/artificiality/animality. It teaches really well. Students have thanked me in evals for assigning it!
