In Final Fantasy 2 (in the US, 4 overall), the game did such a great job in length and scope that I honest-to-goodness thought the game had wrapped up at the Underworld sequence. It had a satisfying conclusion, felt right in terms of scope. Then BOOM. Major twist and you're barely half way through.
