The Jasper Wildfire in Canada in 2024 produced plume driven winds consistent with EF4 and EF5 tornados. Seriously.

Talking about disasters on the internet brings out the worst conspiracy theorists, but this is the first time I’ve seen an “I-35W bridge collapse was intentional with explosives” conspiracy theorist.

Watching an active IR flight over a wildfire in northern California in the midst of writing a book about disasters is a surreal experience.

The Utah wildfire video of a purported firenado has been making the rounds on social media. But was it an actual fire tornado? I think not. Read more here: disastroushistroy.substack.com/p/lets-talk-...

To add some additional context, neither official Kerr County emergency Facebook page posted anything until at least 5:10 am on July 4th. By this point it’s likely that a number of fatalities had already occurred and was a full 4 hours after the first flash flood warnings had been issued.
July 10, 2025 at 10:54 PM
And for good measure, the NWS issued a flash flood emergency at 4:00 am as well. Indicating rainfall rates of 2-4 inches per hour. Which also should have gone to all cell phones in the area.

At 4:05 am it reached major flood stage or ~22 feet. 3 hours after the initial flood warning. It would take until 4:20 am for a local firefighter to say “hey we should issue an alert to residents in the area” and tell the sheriffs department. They said “we need supervisor approval”
July 10, 2025 at 9:42 PM
At 3:10 am it reached moderate flood stage which is ~12 feet. Nearly 2 full hours after the initial warning.
July 10, 2025 at 9:42 PM
It would take until 3:00 am for the Guadalupe River at Hunt, Texas to reach NWS flood stage which is ~10 feet.
July 10, 2025 at 9:42 PM
The first flash flood warning for Kerr County was issued at 1:14 am 7/4/25. It was a considerable threat so a Wireless Emergency Alert (WEA) would have been issued to all cell phones in the area with rainfall rates 2-3 inches per hour.
