Disastrous History
@disastroushistory.bsky.social
The guy that talks a lot about disasters, history, and other things. If you’re here for exclusively disasters, I’m sorry ahead of time.
The northern lights are out again in Nebraska tonight!

This insanity has officially been surpassed

If you’re trying to report on an active disaster scene, stop posting numbers of injuries/trapped/missing/dead from scanners. It does a disservice to emergency responders. They’re not reporting things, they are operating under the minimal information they have.

We’re doing the category 6 hurricane discourse again I guess.

Oddly enough not outright calling it pyrotornadogenesis. Curious as to why
The Jasper Wildfire in Canada in 2024 produced plume driven winds consistent with EF4 and EF5 tornados. Seriously.

Been doing a lot of research into Great Lakes shipwrecks and the Fitz was the last major Great Lakes shipping disaster oddly enough.

These two images of Melissa will be in my mind forever.

One of my Facebook followers sent me this photo of the Edmund Fitzgerald going through (probably) the Soo Locks in the mid 60s

Hurricane Melissa is going to be studied for an incredibly long time

Talking about disasters on the internet brings out the worst conspiracy theorists, but this is the first time I’ve seen an “I-35W bridge collapse was intentional with explosives” conspiracy theorist.

I’m in a meteorology class online right now and I decided to read the discussion board for our most recent project out of curiosity and I did not comprehend the level at which people refuse to look things up to learn on their own

It took awhile but we finally got one

The implication of using this study to give Enderlin an EF5 rating is we can now go back and re rate every tornado based on an actual rating and methodology from the NWS.
October 7, 2025 at 5:33 AM
Justice for my Ashby, Nebraska tornado!
October 6, 2025 at 8:17 PM
If you thought the Enderlin EF-5 was going to end the “was it an EF-5” debates boy oh boy do I have bad news for you. It’s going to make it a million times worse.

A new favorite game I like to play is “is that a real thing or is it from Blaine County Radio in GTA V”
normal people don't say "triggered" or "heteronormative," they say they gave their life to christ in a cracker barrel parking lot

When I worked in DC you would see no less than a dozen police from any point at the national mall at any given time. I lived directly behind the Supreme Court and could see 5 cops at all times from my window. There’s literally no reason to have anymore cops there at all.
Drug Enforcement Administration officers patrolling the National Mall.

If you know DC you understand how tremendously goofy this is

Hey so the new War of the Worlds used real disaster footage and just overlaid aliens. This is the Fort McMurray wildfire.
August 7, 2025 at 4:54 PM
Desperately need Midwesterners to stop complaining about Canadian wildfire smoke.

Online news websites stop posting articles without actually reading the research paper challenge level: Apparently impossible. No one is calling for a 300 meter megatsunami to hit the west coast if the Cascadian Subduction Zone has an earthquake.
August 1, 2025 at 11:52 PM
Genuine question. If someone said the phrase “up underneath” do you know what they mean?
August 1, 2025 at 3:21 PM
So this AccuWeather article title has been driving me nuts since they posted it the other day. This map is *not* supposed to show the best and worst places to live for hazards. It gives you an idea of what to expect for recovery post disaster.
