Link to online presentation is https://tinyurl.com/talkddi Title: Expertise and Engagement in YouTube informational videos: Case studies on the finance advice genre Summary: This study examines discursive strategies of self-presentation and audience engagement employed in YouTube finance advice videos, an underexplored genre situated at the intersection of information and entertainment. The presentation shares insights from corpus-assisted discourse analyses of English-language financial advice videos posted on YouTube. The research draws on positioning theory (Bamberg, 1997) and metadiscourse for examining audience-engaging lexico-grammatical features (Ädel & Mauranen, 2010; Hyland, 2005). The findings illustrate how financial advice videos utilize narratives and metadiscourse to construct and appeal to a target audience. Narratives further contribute to positioning the finance influencer’s brand persona, whereas metadiscourse is present in expressions directing the viewer’s attention and actions. However, there is variation between the personae, as some influencers utilize narratives as part of motivational self-help style discourse whereas others focus more on informative and educational content. Thus, although the videos ostensibly provide financial guidance, they also seek to engage and provide entertainment for the viewer, thereby representing a hybrid genre of advice, self-help, and edutainment genres. Understanding the use of strategies contributing to audience appeal offers insights into their role in shaping influencer brand as well as perceptions of wealth and financial literacy.
