I think it can apply to a childminder, but they have to be registered, ofsted-ed etc. I assume to stop people just paying grandparents (which would actually be a good idea, but that's the UK for you). And as I recall it's from their third birthday, terms don't really apply at nurseries.

(I think it was in The Lion and the Unicorn, maybe. One of the essays, anyway. There's also a bit in Coming Up For Air where he writes about the local conservative candidate getting chucked in the duck pond, and implies it was a common occurrance)

There's a bit in Orwell somewhere where he talks about it - "I may be ugly but you dare not laugh at me". I forget where. But that's what's happening, it's the "oh no, we dare" that they absolutely hate. And that's why they have to pretend that that milkshake could have been full of cement or acid.

Now, I would say that getting pelted with food is an occupational hazard for a politician, and one that is both longstanding and pretty fairly distributed - Corbyn getting egged, Prescott getting a soaking off of him out of the Chumbawumba, etc.

This is the thing with fascists, their whole deal is about the projection of unchallengeable power, and they absolutely cannot take it when that is shown not to be the case. It's what when eg, Nigel Farage gets milkshaked we have days of discourse about the leftwing violence.

Although the University sector right now is pretty much sustained entirely by business degrees, as they're relatively cheap to deliver and rich Chinese and Indian students will pay over the odds for them.

Mention of the South Sea Bubble in the replies and although I do know what that is, my brain always summons up an image of a load of guys in powdered wigs frantically rowing the sort of boats you get in a park lake towards an enormous bubble in the sea.

I'm sure it's well-intentioned and all, but it's constantly on the backfoot because all the power of the symbol is held by the racists, and until they stop or are stopped, that's not gonna change. There just isn't an easy win for anti-racism here, and there's no point pretending there can be.
