In the next thread about vitamin C, I’ll cover three studies on why overdosing with ascorbic acid might not be a great idea. ❗

But something tells me that if Linus Pauling had seen these findings, he might’ve been more cautious about pushing high doses of vitamin C.

In other words, for a supplement to match the benefits of a few servings of fruits or dark leafy greens, you’d need to consume a lot of ascorbic acid—far more than the typical vitamin C supplement contains. 🤔

Not quite.

Foods are more than just the sum of their individual parts. 🍏🥦

For example, when scientists studied the antioxidant power of a small piece of apple, they found that just 5.7 mg of vitamin C had the same antioxidant effect as 1,500 mg of isolated vitamin C (ascorbic acid) supplement.

At the same time, large population studies show that people who eat plenty of fruits and vegetables—foods rich in vitamin C—tend to have lower rates of heart disease, cancer, and overall mortality.

So, many naturally assume that vitamin C is the magic bullet, right?
