Absolutely stoked to have been part of the team to deliver the 14th Australian Media Traditions conference last week. So many highlights, but here are a few pics of some exciting moments!

Proud to speak to ABC about queerness, identity, celebrity branding and bi/pan erasure for this article about the response to Jojo Siwa and Fletcher sharing the complexity of their queer identities during pride month. www.abc.net.au/news/2025-07...

This gift is a celebration of Stella and how important she was for my mental health through that journey. In this house, at least, she is an honorary dogtor. 😉

Hands down the best graduation gift I received is this portrait of my dog (from my partner). My Staffy (cross) Stella was by my side through my whole thesis. Whenever I was stressed, she would demand a walk to get me out of the house and force a break.

While interviewing Australian television creatives and executives about how they negotiated queer stories in Aussie TV drama, I found a common theme: networks were worried audiences would switch off if they saw these themes. But what informed this view?

I’ve spent my Sunday reviewing and sending off the proofs for an article - it feels particularly special to hit submit on this one.

My new research article about Australian audience reactions to Tales of the City in the 1990s has been published. While there were negative reactions, the positive responses far outweighed them! It was exciting to see this moment in our history.

I hope the forthcoming book (Routledge) will help people better understand production culture, what it takes to get queer stories onscreen, and inform the approaches taken by those entering screen industries in Australia and in other markets to tell queer stories in the future.

This PhD was for me. It was about my passion for - my obsession with - the queer stories we see in television and wanting to know how they got there.

A little detour on my way to work today to collect my PhD degree certificate from Swinburne Uni. As much as I’d have loved to attend the ceremony, the timing wasn’t going to work. But that doesn’t diminish how bloody proud I am, right now.

A content warning: these letters feature homophobia and HIV/AIDS stigma as part of the arguments against the inclusion of gay stories in Australian television.

Please see the letters attached to this post.

There has been a backsliding of LGBTIQ+ support in corporate and public discourse in recent years, and I think it is quite stark how familiar these old debates feel today.

By request, I am sharing the letters I analysed (with author names redacted, as this was ~30 years ago), as I think it is interesting to see what was included in this mediated form of participatory culture during the 1990s.

🚨 NEW PUBLICATION ALERT 🚨

In ‘Australian audience reactions to the ABC’s broadcast of Tales of the City, as seen in the Green Guide letters’ I examine a brief public debate unearthed while searching for audience reactions to the first broadcast of the Mardi Gras in 1994: dx.doi.org/10.1080/1030...
