The Berlinale doesn’t need a Wenders right now— it needs a Fassbinder. We all need a reminder of why art shouldn’t just be “entertainment” or “content” but instead must offer radical contestations of the given. Our world is unsustainable. Platitudes are useless.

This year marks the tenth anniversary of the death of German filmmaker Rainer Werner Fassbinder. Among the more than three-dozen films be made are: Fear Eats the Soul, The Marriage of Maria Braun, Berlin Alex-anderplatz, Effi Briest, Despair, and Querelle. His interview with Hella Schlumberger first appeared in the German edition of Playboy, April 1978.

You can't draw any conclusions from the fact that I'm still here. Besides, I'm in Paris most of the time. I think Germany's well on its way to being a nation where people become more and more alike. And that means that individualists...

gave you, it is more mysterious than spring, the El Greco
heavens breaking open and then reassembling like lions
in a vast tragic veldt
that is far from our small selves and our temporally united
passions in the cathedral of Januaries

everything is too comprehensible
these are my delicate and caressing poems
I suppose there will be more of those others to come, as in the past
so many!
but for now the moon is revealing itself like a pearl
to my equally naked heart
