Doug Marlette on Reagan admin nominations, Charlotte Observer, 6/3/1981. Reagan nominated Lefever for Assistant Secretary of State for Human Rights and Humanitarian Affairs. The WaPo called it an effort to placate "ultraconservatives." The Senate Foreign Relations Committee voted 13–4 against him.
