Great to see our cohort data put to work on a big question: does social media harm youth mental health? This new study finds no clear link, reminding us the evidence is often more complex than the headlines.

We have a ✨NEW PREPRINT✨! Using data from the @clscohorts.bsky.social Millennium Cohort Study and linked healthcare records, we tested the association between social media use and psychiatric diagnoses in secondary care in young people in England. This is still a work in progress - feedback welcome!

How can schools better support #LGBTQ+ students, especially those belonging to other minority groups? The STEPS programme, from IoPPN and @kingscsmh.bsky.social worked with teachers and young people to co-produce research to contribute to a culture of change.

Mental health problems cast a shadow over young people's lives - one that can last a lifetime. But too many children are going without the support they need to manage their mental health and thrive.

As #ChildrensMentalHealthWeek kicks off, here are four key facts about the situation we're facing 👇
Infographic: 75% of young people experiencing a mental health problem wait so long that their condition gets worse, or they are unable to access any treatment at all. (Local Government Association, 2023) Infographic: 1 in 5 children and young people in England has a mental health problem. Only a third were able to access treatment in 2023. (Children’s Commissioner for England, 2024) Infographic: Black children are ten times more likely to be referred to mental health services via social services and youth justice teams than through the GP or other voluntary routes, compared with white British children. (NHS Race & Health Observatory, 2022) Infographic: Children with mental health problems are more than twice as likely to live in households that have fallen behind on rent, bills, or mortgage payments compared to their peers without mental health problems. (NHS Digital, 2023)
