As @dncampbell.bsky.social says “If you pile in all this extra demand, is the grid really going to be decarbonised as far as we’d want it? Or will we be forced into what’s happening in the US, where they’re extending the life of coal and gas?”

Our research out today and covered in the Observer 👇 shows emissions from just 10 of the hundreds of UK data centres in the works could wipe out carbon emissions saved by switching to electric cars in 2025! @globalactionplan.bsky.social @foxglovelegal.bsky.social

Ten UK data centres could cancel EV emissions gain
Research has underlined the lack of transparent and reliable figures for expected emissions driven by data centre growth

In a strong field, Microsoft's "vibe writing" is currently one of the more odious terms for gen AI garbage

I often wonder how these corps would have turned the world upside down if genAI was actually accurate and useful. they've lost their minds over shoddy and mediocre tools

More seriously - what if it gives inaccurate or even dangerous responses? How does it handle sensitive info or vulnerable users? What data has it been trained on?

Foxglove's @marthadark.bsky.social was at the UK's Labour party conference this week to warn about the environmental costs of Big Tech's data centres:
lcefuk.bsky.social
There is a real knowledge gap around the energy and water consumption of data centres, says Martha Dark from @foxglovelegal.bsky.social, and there need to be better mechanisms for holding developers to their commitments - how do we build this infrastructure without letting climate targets slip?

Someone should probably inform the White House's "AI & Crypto Czar" that no one is forcing AI companies to train their models on Wikipedia
Tweet by David Sacks: "Wikipedia is hopelessly biased. An army of left-wing activists maintain the bios and fight reasonable corrections. Magnifying the problem, Wikipedia often appears first in Google search results, and now it’s a trusted source for AI model training. This is a huge problem."

OpenAI's plan for teen safety includes seems to rely entirely on this happening:

"parents will need to send their teen an invitation to have their account monitored, and the teen is required to accept it."

Can no one at OpenAI spot the possible flaw here?

After 5 years since the last assessment on the state of nature, it's clear that biodiversity loss & environmental damage are accelerating. Yet, the Commission thinks it's a good idea to roll back the very laws that protect our rivers, our forests, and our health.

We say: #HandsOffNature.

"At the moment the boost to growth is not coming from AI itself but from building the giant datacentres needed to run it. Once those are built, will AI deliver real productivity gains?"

(What it will definitely deliver are huge environmental costs)

There's another option – enforce your rules and stop pretending that the US is still Europe's ally.

Forcing gas-powered data centres on the UK would of course be good news for the world's biggest exporter of fossil gas, which entirely coincidentally is also the US.
dncampbell.bsky.social
Jensen Huang says we have to build more fossil gas power plants in the middle of a climate crisis so he can keep selling chips. The UK Govt shouldn't be entertaining this for a second.
