If, as was said before, you cannot believe, you should ask God for faith.But this too rests entirely in the hands of God who gives faith sometimes openly, sometimes in secret…. If you wish to rouse yourself to faith, first of all, you should no longer contemplate the suffering of Christ (for this has already done its work and terrified you). Instead, pass through that and see Christ’s friendly heart and how full of love it is toward you that it impels him to carry with heaviness your conscience and your sin. Then your heart will be sweet toward him, and the confidence of faith will be strengthened. Now go further and rise through Christ’s heart to God’s heart…. There you will find the divine, good, fatherly heart, and, as Christ says [John 6:44], you will be drawn to the Father through him. Then you will understand the words of Christ [John 3:16], “For God so loved the world that he gave his only Son....” That is, we know God properly when we grasp God not in God’s power or wisdom (which is terrifying), but in God’s kindness and love. Some of the questions we hope to address include: • What role does the Nicene Creed have in lifelong spiritual formation? • How does the Nicene Creed serve as a foundation (both an opportunity and a challenge) in ecumenical and interfaith dialogue? • What are the implications for contemporary pneumatology with the proposed removal of the Filioque? • Why might a community continue to use the Nicene Creed when its language and style seem antiquated? • How do modern creeds and professions of faith relate to the Nicene Creed? If modern texts are to be adopted by churches today, what might the process be? Please send your submissions or your questions to the editor Kyle Schiefelbein-Guerrero, ksg@saskatoontheologicalunion.ca. Submissions should be between 3000 and 4000 words, as an MS Word attachment (see additional requirements), and formatted in either APA or Chicago style.

This museum is amazing. I'm not religious, but the slavery exhibit nonetheless felt like a sacred space of remembrance. It is profoundly moving.

How might Lutheran theology contribute to an ecumenical conversation about leadership?
Leaders as Theologians of the Cross: Leaders are to call a “thing what it actually is” and thus operate with both honesty and transparency. Leading requires rejecting “solutioneering” (dealing solely with the immediate issue by putting a familiar bandage on the situation) and instead engaging the Body of Christ impacted by the situation as co-partners in the work of mission. Leading is not always easy either. It requires decentering the self and attending to a multitude of relationships. This includes being in relationships with data and contexts, to be informed honestly about what is actually going on -- what it actually is!

What else might be needed for this ecosystem of theological formation?
"[Seminaries are] to be nurseries of the church for all estates and as workshops of the Holy Spirit..." (Philip Jacob Spener, Pia Desideria, 103) Being "nurseries of the church" connects with the very word seminary, which evokes biological meanings connected to the germination of plants and animals, a process that requires tending, nurturing, and supporting growth. Theological formation occurring "for all estates" may mean attending to the entirety of the ecosystem, from the seedlings (youth and young adults) to the larger plants (adults), from the soil (biblical/historical/theological foundations) to the irrigation (contextual education), from those who plant (existing leaders) and water (scholars) to ultimately the One who gives the growth--God (see 1 Cor. 3:6-7).
