This more or less is the thought process that drove me to pick up sketching in my downtime, because I was so sick of seeing AI pollute places that had a rich art culture, that diminished social interaction and hollowed it all out. I still see artists I mourn, having hung up a pencil for a prompt.

Accept that it'll suck. Accept that it might be a waste. Embrace that you're doing it for fun. Don't worry about the 'authentic' way to learn. Do whatever gets the ball rolling creatively, but make sure it's *your* hands doing the work. When an idea hits, fan it into a fire you HAVE to feed.

The best you can expect when you wait for things to be ideal before you start trying things, is for stasis. You eventually get so good at putting things off you never flex those muscles for when the moment grabs you. To quote my favourite HoL adaptation: Happiness must be fought for.

but here's some post-work clarity:
I'm someone who does a lot of observation and reflection. It leads to a lot of hesitation. Also, the endless angst of squandering my time meant I never actually got rolling. I had to care so much that I stopped worrying

if there's anything I learned in picking up a pencil and exploring pencilwork it's that you gotta be a little crazy, a little shameless, a little dumb, and a little reckless. If not for anyone else, then just for you.
