The most fundamental political debate of our time: You are integrated into and have responsibility for our complex, imperfect society vs. Nuh-uh.

My first pseudoscorpion observation was pure luck. Happen to see this wasp and took a shot. It was only later did I see what was hanging on the antenna.

On iNaturalist [ www.inaturalist.org/observations... ]
A brown pseudoscopion hanging on to the antenna of a wasp. The wasp is yellow with black stripes and transparent wings.

oh it's cool caterpillar friday? i guess so
#bugsky #insects #lepidoptera
an odd, wedge-shaped caterpillar with no visible legs or head. it's a slug caterpillar, Prolimacodes badia, or skiff moth (a reference to the boat-shaped caterpillars) two red-headed caterpillars chowing down on some leaves. they are black with white and yellow stripes, lots of thick projections, and a large red spot - they're called red-humped caterpillars. Oedemasia concinna Acronicta longa. a dark brown/black caterpillar with rows of tufts with large spines, most of which emerge from white spots. the caterpillar is arched and the row at the top of the arch is red-tinted instead of white.

Gorgeous lil Wolf Spider (Lycosinae, species uncertain) I found stuck in a stairwell and- with some effort -coaxed onto my hand and released outside.

I hope I find some more, Wolf Spiders are so beautiful and their faces are just precious. 🥰

Millipede fans rejoice: we published our revision of Apheloria! This is the most common cherry millipede genus, but its taxonomy has been riddled with nebulous subspecies names. No longer! We clarify species limits and provide a distribution map. mapress.com/zt/article/v... @apheloria.bsky.social

I found this rove beetle friend on the rainforest floor. They are so so fast, you can imaging me chasing it around with my camera just rolling around in the leaf litter. Just unbelievable colors. In person the rainbow iridescence is stunning. It’s hard to say much here beyond just wow.

The idiom "like a moth to the flame" dates to at least the 12th century, to Persian love poem "Layla and Majnun". Shakespeare references it in "Merchant of Venice."

But here's the thing. Moths DON'T fly to flames. And we're just now understanding that.

Let's talk about dorsal light response.

secret friend in the goldenrod
#lacewing #bugsky #insects
the head and a couple legs of a larval insect, the rest of the body is obscured by goldenrod flowers. it's a green lacewing, Chrysoperla rufilabris.

if you're an american and you use iNaturalist to ID a lacewing larva it will probably suggest this species... every day i correct multiple observations mis-IDed to this - many of which aren't even in the same family.
