Today my @nytimes.com colleagues and I are launching a new series called Lost Science. We interview US scientists who can no longer discover something new about our world, thanks to this year‘s cuts. Here is my first interview with a scientist who studied bees and fires. Gift link: nyti.ms/3IWXbiE

The conservation world lost one of its guiding lights on Wednesday when renowned primatologist Jane Goodall passed away at 91.

Over 65 years studying chimpanzees in the wild, Goodall proved that primates are a lot like people. But her impact goes far beyond chimps. 🧵
Close up of jungle plant life. There is a quote from Jane Goodall in white text over the image. It reads: "What you do makes a difference and you have to decide what kind of a difference you want to make."

Are you an early-career biologist or ecologist who would benefit from an invited seminar? Would you like to come to UMaine next fall or spring to give a talk? Leave a brief comment with some info about what you do. I'm co-hosting our seminar series again, and am filling out our rosters.

Southern Resident killer whales are perilously closed to extinction, with only 73 individuals left. Earlier this year, 31 scientists, across disciplines and borders, met in Vancouver to ask a hard question: What will it take to save this population? Find out more: www.raincoast.org/reports/reco...

‼️ Dear MARMAM community,
We, at the DEI Committee of the Society for Marine Mammalogy, are beginning the process of establishing an Indigenous Representation Subcommittee, the idea of which came out of an ad hoc meeting held at the SMM conference in Boorloo (Perth) in the Whajuk region of WA (1/n)

Yangtze finless porpoise (Neophocaena asiaeorientalis) habitat has shrunk by at least 65% over the past 1,400 years as evidenced by data extracted from 724 ancient Chinese poems! This finding highlights the vital link between conservation and cultural heritage! 🧪
