Friends don’t let friends use X/Twitter. If you know people live-posting #eseb2025 on the cursed network, kindly point them towards Mastodon or Bluesky. (I think there are good reasons to prefer Mastodon, but Bluesky is infinitely better than continuing to promote X by posting scientific content […]

Graduation is such a joy. Here are two new fish scientists, who know a bit more about fish behaviour and gene expression than they did this time last year (paper to follow I hope).
Two young men with graduation robes on, either side of a woman with more colourful robes on. They all look a bit proud.

Just calculated my #fsbigreentravel CO2 in case @otolithgirl.bsky.social calculates the total carbon saved for the conference by delegates trying to be greener... I reckon the train and ferry combo (14kg) saves over 100kg CO2 compared to car and plane (125kg) Hull to Belfast.

Great morning of talks, followed by whiskey and salmon at Bushmills, can't argue with that. #fsbi2025
A man explains how salmon are caught and counted on a bridge. A group of about 8 scientists (most women) are listening. A man holding a small net looks down into a pool, an adult salmon can be seen just breaching the surface of the water. A group of people walk towards two white buildings, one labelled Smolt Trap and one labelled Adult Trap. Tables in an old wood ceiling room, set up with whiskey for tasting with barrels in the background.

Second leg of our epic journey to #FSBI2025 complete! Now at the Sky Bar on the ferry in case anyone else is also on the Stena line! 🍻 Picked up @domino-joyce.fishsci.com.ap.brid.gy on our way! Full disclosure: had to sneak into an uber after missing the metro, but IT WAS ELECTRIC! #FSBIGreenTravel

Wanted to add a #salmon to #phylopic and needed to remove the outline edge white pixels to make it solid black. Thought I'd try chatGPT.

It didn't produce exactly what I wanted....

I was dreading coming in to work today because I'm SO behind with everything and I feel guilty all the time about it because there is TOO MUCH, but now I've spoken to 3 students doing or wanting to do cool fish research and remembered why I love this job and I feel a bit better again […]

Having a celebratory beer by the Ness on a lovely evening, thinking about salmon and genomics. (Our loss is also your loss Leicester, sorry). #failingupwards #subtoot #academicchatter #riverness #scotland
Wide river with an orange setting sun on the left hand side of the picture. Hazy hills in the distance and interesting buildings poking into the orange-blue skyline either side of the water.

I LOVE HULL! What a great city and university. Really enjoyed getting back to my zoology roots with such a welcoming and interesting department. Best moment was meeting your ancient gibbon! Thank you for inviting and hosting me @domino-joyce.fishsci.com.ap.brid.gy and Darron Cullen!

Lovely to welcome Dr Anna Sturrock from The University of Essex to Hull yesterday for a brilliant talk about all the amazing forensic and archeological tools we can use to better understand fish migration @otolithgirl.bsky.social
