@rhodri.biz I found this little dude at my mum’s house, which I think was made by your dad!

Here's how the real two-tier Britain works:
1. Whatever Nigel Farage says, however stupid, is looped and discussed by the media, while left-wing voices are treated as noises off.
2. Tiny far-right protests get massive airtime, while 10s of 000s gathering for Palestine or green causes are ignored.🧵

On the joys of whales, lumpfish, the ocean:

I discovered something delightful this year. I have sea legs. Perhaps because I come from an island, and I have never lived far from a sea. My idea of ‘home’ is ‘small and annoying cities by the sea’.

I am never sea […]

A photo of a humpback whale looking like it is doing a backflip. Over blue green water. A bird flies overhead.

I posted a photo a few days ago but wanted to share it again with this post

Friends don’t let friends use X/Twitter. If you know people live-posting #eseb2025 on the cursed network, kindly point them towards Mastodon or Bluesky. (I think there are good reasons to prefer Mastodon, but Bluesky is infinitely better than continuing to promote X by posting scientific content […]

I'm going to steal this great explanation of ascertainment bias: if some dolphins push people towards shore, and some push them out to sea, we’ll never hear the stories of the 2nd, because the people drowned. Beaulieu #eseb2025

On reflection, I think the big mistake is the conflation of #ai with #llm and #machinelearning.
There are genuine exciting advances in ML with applications all over the place, in science, (not least in my own research group looking at high resolution regional climate downscaling), health […]

Hey @nature.com What's up with your share buttons? Can we please also get 🦋 and 🦣 options to not exclusively promote the network of the guy who has done more than most to harm US science?

@biology Why are you boosting homeopathy nonsense just because it added the #biology tag? Bit of added QC might be needed to maintain credibility.

The important characterisation of the UK pop'n from More In Common highlights v low levels of trust in most former 'authoritative' professions.

Scientists are the exception.

Trust both fragile & valuable. We scientists must continue to *earn* it. Science communication is more important than ever.

I had to get home. I was offered the chance to get a taxi from Dorset to London at no cost, so I took it. Hilariously, the man who was in the taxi before us left a new pair of trousers in the boot. He needs them. He is in Poole. We, and his trousers, are on the M25. What larks.
