Consistency. That’s what they want from me, from the others like me. A high performance floor, a low performance ceiling. No miracles, no disasters. Trust. It’s all about trust. The mech’s foot slips because the autopilot’s inverse kinematics can’t account for rockslides. I instinctively jerk my own foot, and the autopilot registers it, slamming the mech’s toe spikes into the mountainside. That instinct is trained - training is what I’m good for, what makes me so consistent. I gave my entire childhood to the academy. Like an olympic athlete, I trained my entire life for something I knew would only last a few years, something that could have disappeared at any moment. Who knows when experimental projects like these will have their funding cut because the government doesn’t like what DART’s done in the middle east or Indochina or wherever else the needle’s been inserted this year. I trained, because I wanted to be a mech pilot. Lots of kids say they want to be astronauts when they grow up. They never think about having to be in the airforce, having to be selected, having to be the best and brightest to be the one who gets to do it. I did. I didn’t fantasize about being a pilot - I planned. Charted and coursed every step of the way. I know exactly how this machine works, every subsystem of the autopilot, the specifications of every bullet it fires and the grip strength of every finger. The mech can’t rock climb on its own, and I wasn’t cleared for jumpjets on this mission. My fingers curl in the interface gel, and the mech’s fingers curl in turn. I feel the texture of the rock simulated and transmitted through the touch sensors, test if it will hold the weight. I feel some give, and in frustration I rip a small boulder out of the mountain. I throw it behind me, and I probably kill something. Doesn’t matter. The next handhold doesn’t fail me.

In Brigandine, the way you recover from heart problems is snorting gunpowder.
Bilious: Associated with FORGE and representing caustic fluid, toxic venom and poisonous flesh. Spider bites, acidic spray and bad mushrooms are all bilious. Whether bilious damage can melt objects is at GM discretion if not specified through the ‘melt’ ailment. Injury 1 Brachycardia: Lasting weaken equal to injury inflicting wounds. Snorting powder and ingesting bullets daily allow for recovery. Injury 2 Vasoconstriction: Reduce will by current wounds. Recovery is possible with daily ingestion of 1 encumbrance of nitre, taken nasally or equivalent. Injury 3 Heart Failure: Reduce blood total by current wounds. Recovery is only possible with implantation of 1 encumbrance of nitre directly into the heart, requiring a Difficulty Rating 15 + wounds check. This process also inflicts coma (physical injury 3).

Barrowknights are predators clad in tarnished armor. Crawls like insects, swinging blindly. Mournful & territorial predators, attended by squirabs; bowing, scraping servants, undeveloped grubs, carrying knives they are loathe to use.

Character creation in Brigandine is almost ready for playtesting, which means that the game itself is too. This here is the Boole in Doublecross' test character, Tiberius - A troll from Sebite origins, former mercenary marine and current wastrel with a chip on his shoulder. Pain is his faith.
