Thousands of Twitter users mistook my username for a phone company, the situation went viral, and I ended up starring in a mockumentary commercial/short film that won major advertising awards. Filming it was one of my best experiences ever — a theater kid’s dream come true — and that’s my real mom.

It sounds like an old joke but I'm 100% serious: if conversion therapy was actually a non-coercive, voluntary, and respectful attempt to relieve an individual's distress about their own sexuality, heterosexual women would be choosing it at least semi-regularly.

At 30 I'd never been to college, had achieved none of my creative dreams, never had an intimate relationship go well, & worked minimum-wage jobs while intermittently homeless. At 57 I'm a full professor, a published author & webcomic creator, happily married, & in the best shape of my life (so far).

The foolish idea that the course of your life is already set, and that it's too late to start on a new path, is only true if you live like it's true. Your 30s are a perfect time to create your life anew and start working toward the realization of new goals and dreams. So are your 40s and your 50s.
