Using the World Cup as an excuse to axe a round and exclude a large chunk of pro clubs from the competition is ridiculously weak.
I don't have the energy to do the math but there surely was a way to get everyone in and not overlap with WC.
These rules are welcome changes though.

Lord help me I've just discovered the free app that lets you build custom Lego things out of whatever parts you want and then it can do photorealistic renderings for you and also give you a parts list and cost if you need me I'll be making little starships for the next 3 decades

Only 4/11 teams hanging on, 3 of those in #MLS. Of the living, only Vancouver & TB still carry the same club name (TB of course had to spend 2 years as "FC Tampa Bay" due to IP issues).
TB is the sole lower division survivor from this period.
