fifa: "perfect"

Last bit on this (maybe).

The '94 WC came with a caveat that @ussoccer.com form a D1 league - they did & in the process totally bypassed preexisting pro soccer clubs in the country.

The '26 WC comes with US Soccer using it to further nerf their most prestigious domestic competition.

#GrowTheGame
Using the World Cup as an excuse to axe a round and exclude a large chunk of pro clubs from the competition is ridiculously weak.

I don't have the energy to do the math but there surely was a way to get everyone in and not overlap with WC.

These rules are welcome changes though.

If we have to live w/ these pared-down "qualification" rules, the minimum we could do is keep the defending Cup holders in the competition.

Win USOC -> qualifies you for CCC -> partcipating in said CCC disqualifies you from the competition you won to get into CCC in the first place. So stupid lol
This isn't "qualification", it's allocation of leftover teams (no offence to said teams). US Soccer, MLS, et al, should be looking to grow this important historic tournament not diminish it. For the second season running the defending champion won't get to defend their title.

The #USOC @opencup.ussoccer.com is far more important to the overall health of the game in this country than hosting a bunch on international all-star teams for a month once every 30 years.

Probably either this authentic “Do Not Stand Along The Fence” sign from Lockhart Stadium, or the framed portrait of Doug Lockhart, said venue’s namesake.

This is… better than what we assumed earlier today but still stupid.

Once the USL pyramid and mens calendar issues settle can we please return to ALL independent pro clubs participating every year thank you
We got some further clarification on the US Open Cup changes. Full tournament details out tomorrow, but the gist of it is the changes came from US Soccer, NOT the USL.

Additional thoughts:

1. Provides a chance for a clean organizational break away from Nike before 2026/27 Super League season

2. Reminder that there is a non-zero chance any men's USL club delaying to / starting in 2027 could mean kicking off in *August* 2027
This is probably a very smart move for a few reasons (not the least of which is letting the air clear further locally post-IMCF relocation), but nonetheless now I have major bummers :(

Silver lining - PSL, outside shot Space Coast / Winter Garden come online by 2027 too
Fort Lauderdale United confirms what was widely assumed at this point - pivoting to 2027 "allowing additional time to reinforce its foundation across player development, facilities, and community programming."

Sporting Cascades expected to make a similar announcement shortly.

TIL there is a trans-Atlantic *arena* football league aiming to start in 2026.

Massive early 2000s vibes on their website. Get a look now before this vanishes into the mists of time lol

(lowkey kinda like their "if your team wins the championship, we renew your season tickets for free" idea tho)

He would probably be the best of the small handful of former Strikers who are still active that FTLUTD could get

The other women's D1 league does not have a nuetral site championship game. Year 1 it ended up Fort Lauderdale vs Tampa Bay with TB hosting. Was an outstanding atmosphere.

Imagine if they had pre-picked Spokane, or Brooklyn, or even a closer place, like Lexington, as host. It woulda sucked.

Lord help me I've just discovered the free app that lets you build custom Lego things out of whatever parts you want and then it can do photorealistic renderings for you and also give you a parts list and cost if you need me I'll be making little starships for the next 3 decades

DC Power of the Gainbridge Super League have extended an offer for free agent Trinity Rodman that the NWSL can't currently match due to the salary cap.

Jessica Berman: "We want Trinity in the NWSL and we will fight for her."
