The time for making the case is now, things have changed, it's an open goal...

*in a parallel but very distant universe*, l should have said...

Meanwhile, in a parallel universe, Labour has been relentlessly focused on the damage caused by Brexit, singling out Farage and Badenoch for good measure.

And here it is (from La Stampa):

National Future.

There are still many among the activists the party relies on to thrive and campaign.

Hence my bet is that she won't do it, and will keep tolerating them, hoping they won't be noticed too much...

While this is a positive step forward (l have never heard her condemn Fascism in such unambiguous terms), it would need to be followed by decisive action against those within the party who still perform roman salutes & embrace extreme right ideas.

I struggle to comprehend what else needs to happen to convince them.

Babies thrown to the lions?

Elderly ladies being pushed off a roof?

Being talked about in the media won't be enough; saying the most outrageous things about migrants and LGBTQ+ communities will not be enough.

Chances of success for V. seem very slim right now.

Nonetheless, he immediately welcomed large number of reps from other parties who jumped ship and brought experience, knowledge, and rootedness at local level, where they had built their clientele.

Berlusconi was well aware of importance of n.4. & acted accordingly. As he launched his own personal vehicle (Forza Italia) at the end of 1993, he had huge financial means, owned 3 national TV channels, was supported by his own advertising agency & filled a political space that had been left vacant.

... may continue to amplify his views.

4. While some League's reps will decide to follow him, these are likely to be very few. Lack of knowledge/experience/skills in the institutions at all levels (national and subnational) is also a serious impediment across the board.

3. Although he's created a couple of associations that will allow him to receive donations, he will lack the League's well oiled political machine and crowd of activists. In the run-up to the next general elections, this will make a big difference, much as the Italian media (including RAI)...

2. Since becoming deputy leader, whenever V. got involved in campaigning for subnational elections the League has performed poorly. It may not have been only his fault, but still: he does not appear to be such a great asset either right now.

I have to agree with Salvini on this: V. is unlikely to do well:

1. Political space V. wants to occupy is crowded already, with League having already overtaken Brothers of Italy on the right on long list of issues. Can't see any evidence that right wing electorate is eager to switch to something new

However, in a country of personalised politics and personal or "almost-personal" parties Vannacci must feel that the time has come for him to fly the nest & do his own thing, rather than playing second fiddle to Salvini.
