We’ve found and preserved an unknown/previously lost silent, pre-war Japanese film from a 35mm nitrate print.
Its name is Longing for Rocks and Snow (雪と岩へのあこがれ) produced by the Yokohama Cinema Company and released sometime around 1930. No further details are available.

Day 60: I Haven't Got a Hat (1935)

It's Porky Pig! Five years after Looney Tunes began they finally get their first star character, even if he doesn't look or sound quite right yet.

“How Walt Stole Mickey”?!

He didn’t.

He co created the mouse, both personally and voice. Ub Iwerks designed the mouse we know today. It’s not that hard! 🙄

I finally had my fill of poor transfers of 1930s Ub Iwerks and Van Beuren animation on YouTube and elsewhere on the internet and ordered the ThunderBean blu-rays. I should have been getting these long ago. So revealing in how well animated and under appreciated these cartoons are.

And here's the title card to Steamboat Willie.

Walt Disney's name is there. The word "Copyright" and the date is as well.

But the Ub Iwerks credit & Powers Cinephone mark are between them. Meaning it doesn't match the format specified by law.

So, what's come into the public domain is Ub Iwerks's version of Mickey Mouse. He got shat upon by Disney quite enough during his lifetime; he doesn't need the rest of us piling up the excrement with "edgy" takes on his creation.

While Washington Irving left Ichabod Crane’s fate open-ended after his encounter with The Headless Horseman, a 1934 Ub Iwerks cartoon gave Ichabod the last laugh by having him interrupt the wedding of his rival Brom Bones to Katrina while disguised as The Horseman. #FairyTaleTuesday
